I pulled the trigger on some Kysrium SL and am wondering if running a front tri spoke or a disc back would have a decent effect for races (I will pick up both eventually, but considering either or right now).  So is a tri spoke front or rear disc going to pay bigger dividends?  Or should I just calm down and enjoy the Mavics for now?

Hell no, spend the money!

Getting both should be worth at least 1mph at your race speeds, I went from a 21.7 average on a ten-mile time trial last year, to a 24.8mph average on the same TT last week. Same bike, same engine (4,000 miles later), different wheels.

Actual results may vary.

Thats what I like to hear!  However, if funds are limited (and likely wifes patience as packages keep rolling into the house), is getting a front HED with rear Ksyrium or rear disc with front Kysrium the better option?  Like I said, getting both eventually, but need to let the UPS guy take a rest.  Proceeds from pinball I auctioned off on that other thread have thus far yielded a Computrainer and Ksyriums.  I have about $500 to play with to get that money outta my hands.  I think you mentioned an inexpensive alternative to a disk being a wheel cover in another thread?  Any more info on that.

PS  That is awesome on the speed increase.  I am hoping to keep working at it to see the same results.  Went from about 18mph to 21.5 (and rising) over my 21 mile TT loop in about a year.  Now that I will actually ride this winter, who knows....

There are other threads on BT dealing with this issue; try doing a search.

My recollection is that a more aero front wheel gives better results than only having an aero/disc rear.

The good news is that you can pick up an aero front wheel and a disc cover for your rear for about the $500 you've got left.

For the cover, check out wheelbuilder.com (they'll trim the cover to fit your current wheel).  But it may take a little extyra time as the owner is in Europe helping build wheels for some guy in a bike race over there.

I just got a Hed 3 front wheel and am racing with it for the first time this weekend - we'll see how it goes.  If I'm faster than last year, it's 90% me and 10% from the wheel; it I'm slower, it has to be the wheel's fault...

JohnnyK is right - I got the plastic disc cover and a brand new front Hed alps 55mm both for less than $450.00. I used that setup for a HIM and a Oly with good results... (FYI - I got the plastic disc cuz I race with a power tap)
