Subject: Did I really loose that much fitness?
On 05/12 I had a though weekend with a 2.3m swim; 14mi run and 62mi bike.
The next week I biked 90mi and ended up with an overuse injury in my ankle/foot/lower-leg.
Since then I reduced my training from ~10hrs per week to ~5-6hrs per week with litte run and reduced bike.
On 06/09 I did a sprint tri-turned du (1mi run- 11mile bike - 2mi run) and placed 2nd in my AG (19th out of 81 overall).

From 06/13 to 06/22 my brother came for a visit and I ate not soo good and did no workouts (other than 5hrs shopping daily and one 6.5hr round of golf).

Last night on the trainer I was not able to hold 95 rpm when doing 189Watts (computrainer ergo mode) for 60 minutes (FTP is/was 212Watts).
I managed to hold the 189 Watts, but it was painfull. Also on sunday I struggled druing my 3hr ride (at 100F) and barely could hold 150Watts toward the end.
Also I am having some mild foot/ankle/lower leg discomfort again....

I am worried that I lost a lot of fittness/endurance/power as my CTL in TP is way down.
Especially looking at my X-50 (1mi swim - 40mi bike - 9mi run) in 2 weeks sunday is a bit worriesome.
I think the HIM in October will be fine.

What was your wattage on your 5/12 and 6/9 races? And was it 100F out during those races?

It's one of two things -- either you did lose the fitness or, you know, IT WAS 100 DEGREES OUT!

Wait for a cooler day then go out and try again, would be my advice.

Would heat (and lack of hydration) also account for sore muscles the days after?

Any estimate on how fast I can gain back the fitness I lost?

Of course heat and lack of hydration would account for sore muscles. At least that's been my experience.

Look, taking nine days off isn't going to do improve your fitness, and you likely lost some, but throw in the fact that you hadn't done anything for a long time with 100 degree temps and you're in for some pain. Just stick with your plan and you'll get it back soon. It shouldn't take long. Just don't freak out over it and DONT take nine days off again!

Heat, and the corresponding dehydration, absolutely played a role in your muscles being sore. Your body has to work harder as the temperature rises which leads to many negative side affects if not dealt with properly.

If you're training in heat, make sure you monitor your heart rate as it will elevate quickly. Your body works much harder in heat to cool the body down which causes your HR to increase. Therefore, you have to train smart and not go off just pacing when it's 100+ out. You can come train with me on Saturday here in Phoenix where it will be 117 if you want a crash course on how to deal with the heat. Long story short - IT SUCKS

Woohoo, can't wait for that! I guess I should try and get out before 7am Saturday morning. Although it was almost, dare I say, cool on my ride this morning.

the problem with being really fit is that it's like blowing up a balloon with a hole in it.

the fitter you are, the quicker you lose it when you stop doing what it takes to stay there.

in 42 days- you're back to your base level and kinda' need to start all over.

What is considered base level?

This must be something that can be brought up over time as well, I mean there is no way I would be as bad in shape as I was 3 years ago if I rest for 42 days. (Back then I was not able to run a mile, one mile be foot would have been at least 15minutes)

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

Mental toughness is skill. You need to learn how to suffer. You practice perseverance everyday when you are out training in the bad weather, when you ride or run further than you have ever gone.

My dog is an intelligent runner. She does a big stretch before she does anything. She starts out slowly and gradually builds up speed until we are running very fast.

“Less is more,” is a common buzz phrase in endurance sports today. It refers to the trend of training less but focusing on intensity and quality rather than on quantity.
