Subject: Australia is the fastest country in 5K runs

I just got an email from Runkeeper letting me know that they were teaming up with Under Armour to launch a new shoe. In the add they say "runners know speed is everything and Australia is the fastest country in 5K runs *tracked with Runkeeper*** because Australian runners can run a 5K in 23:49"

Wait, what?

So does that mean fast runners never use Run Keeper? Because while a 5K in 23:49 is a dream for me I have a 15 year old son who ran one in 22:08 with no training. I know there are people who run much faster than that here on BT. And what about Kenya?

Just curious why an app that logs people's running times would do an add like this; am I missing something?

Can someone who can run a sub 20 minute 5K please download this app and go run today? Just so they will know it can be done....

This means that someone in the marketing department at runkeeper has both a limited command of statistics and the english language.

Nothing more.

It is clearly an average of everyone that has completed a 5k distance using the app, not necessarily a "race" either. Around here phones are not allowed in most races so that would be one reason for the average to be higher. I also suspect many many of the users are new to running and are run/jog/walking the distance, such as with the "couch to 5k" program.

I just read a news line that said Twinkies are returning to shelves in the US. So I see the US average dropping even more in the near future :-(

I was really just posting this for a laugh.

They say the "top Australians come in at 23 something...."

anyway...

Maybe they can add or at least spell better than me even if they cannot get their ad statistics correct Laughing
