Why is it I see a lot of 650c wheels with high spoke counts of 28h and 32h when most 700c are 20/24? How would this effect stiffness and or loss of aero?

The wheel would tend to be stiffer (laterally) and have moderately more drag. Probably has more to do with rim selection (the higher spoke count rims are the only ones available) than any needed benefit.

Had a set of 650c wheels made a couple of years ago. Finding pre drilled rims that matched the spoke counts I wanted was hard. I ended up doing Velocity Deep V rims on a DuraAce front hub and custom made ecentric rear hub based of a 32 hole MTB disc hub. This was to convert my old Tri frame to a Fixie. The front is lower spoke count but I don't remember exactly what it is any more.

ZIpp has 16 and 20 spoke 650c wheels, you might be able to source rims from them.
http://www.alibaba.comhas 650c rims on it where you can specify the spoke hole counts.

I just took a look at Velocity and they don't even offer the Deep V in 650c anymore. A23 or Fusions now, they do have 5 different spoke holes to pick from (20 to 36)

Yes, it seems that most are 32H, which just seems like overkill.

Always wondered the same thing... never really made any sense to me.

My wife has 650's on her tri bike... Hed Jet6/9 with 18F/24R. That makes sense to me... but trying to find a pair of wheels for training, and well, high spoke count it is... She's NEVER going to need 32 spokes...

My back wheel needs to be trued up. It has a slight side-to-side wobble, and I feel at times like I'm going to lose control when I ride. Is this something that I should only trust to my LBS to do?

The wheels are my first area of concern and I have started to shop around. I find it nauseating to think of spending the same amount for wheels as my bike. Any help?
