Subject: Running Shoe Recommendation
I have been training for about a month now and I'm in need of some new running shoes. I didn't wear out a pair of shoes in a month, I've just been using the pair I had before I started training.

Specifically, I'm looking for a shoe that provides good support in the arch. I have collapsed arches (flat feet). I used to wear custom orhthotics as a teenager, but I havent done so for many years now as I no longer have pain in the arch. However, I do notice when Im running that my left foot (the worse of the two) rolls inward (towards the right foot) significantly on each foot strike. In addition to the stress I'm sure its causing on my ankle and knee, I'm sure its slowing me down too! Can anyone recommend a good running shoe that provides the kind of arch support I need? Or should I take a any running shoe and just add an insole that provides more arch support?

Thanks in advance.

You should go to a good running store (not, for example, Foot Locker) and have them help you select a shoe.  They should check out your gait and be able to recommend a shoe for you.

you will pay a little more, but a real running store is worth it. they should video tape you and analyze several parts of your running stride. the correct shoe will make all of the difference. dont let anyone suggest a shoe they like. everyone is different.

Ditto here. Runner's World maintains a list of specialty running shoe stores that have the expertise and customer service necessary to get you into the right shoe, so this is  a good place to start:

Also ask your local running and triathlon clubs for guidance into where to go to get properly fitted.

Agree, you should go to running store (one the specializes in these types of shoes). A good shoe fit is key as it will help with comfort and injury.

Thanks for the advice.

There's a store on the Runner's World list that I plan on checking out (Westchester Road Runner in White Plains, NY). What kind of things should I be looking for at the store to ensure that they're fitting me properly and that they know what they're doing?

A good running store is the key, and the people are what matter.  I had no idea this little shop a block from where I work even existed until I asked some local runners where to go, and it was unanimous and its been THE place for years and years because of the owner and top employees.  The fit I got has made a ton of difference.  I'll buy there forever - really, the loyalty is amazing both ways (runners loyal to store, and store dedicated to runners).  They even know me on sight now.  There is no substitute for really good folks at the local shop.  Oh, and they aren't on that list Bear referenced...you've got to ask runners (or tri athletes) where to go locally.

if they have a treadmill, and analyze your gait, they probably know what they are doing. if the person helping you can't work the equipment, ask someone else :-)

be sure to try more than one shoe. an appropriate Brooks may not feel as good to you as a comparable Asics.
