Subject: Concussion...now what to do...
Well, I am 4 weeks from my sprint that I felt my training was going good for and I got myself a concussion (4th in my 35 years) Wednesday night playing softball (ran into a guy) Six stitches on my chin and CT Scan later I am sitting on the couch trying to decide what to do now.

To make a long story short I still have a mild headache and soreness. Planning on taking off till monday and see how things feel by then. Has anyone had similar injury and have suggestions for how quickly you got back into training or problems you may have had. Doctor only could say go as you feel. While I tend to do that, I also tend to fool myself into thinking I feel better than I do.

Also, any suggestion on how to best user the 4 weeks I will have left would be helpful. I will want to opimtimize time while not risking slowing down healing.

Thanks,

Keith "Punch Drunk" Morgan

BTW...anyone following migraine thread....my neurplogist thinks that my concussions from the past are a big part of my migraines now. So for those out there who might ride without a helmet or do things that might not cover your head....PROTECT YOUR SQUASH! I will get off my soap box now...

later

Well Joker,

I found myself in the same position two years ago. I too fooled myself into thinking I was ok. I raced thinking I would just take a easy. That was the second lie. It turned out very badly and I ended up dropping out.

In the end up doing more damage than good and that resulted in me being totally out of it for a year because I kept trying to come back before my body was perfectly healed.

There will always be other races. Don't mess with concussions and your head. You only have one. At least one that can think clearly.

Joker! I'm so sorry to hear about your noggin. I've had a 2-3 concussions in my life time which is a bit longer than your wee 35 years!
Ask the doc....and take his advice. I couldn't tell you what to do but I certainly can relate to wanting to push it.
Ironically, I banged my ankle pretty bad carrying around my son's rocking horse and trying to fit it through a doorway today. When I felt that ping of pain I thought, 'wouldn't it be awful if something happened to physically knock me out of my next race in August!' Here I've been dealing with lots of mental issues but the physical side needs to be 'guarded' too.
Take it easy my friend and have a chat with your doctor!
Let us know how it goes.

TimmyMay,

Was yours anything more than a concussion or was there something else? What happened that kept you out for a year?

Just currious...your response has me a worried?

Just take your MD's advice. My MD told me not to do anything and I didn't listen. I crashed during a Sprint race on the last turn. It wasn't a good idea to go into a 90 degree turn at 34kph. I took it wide hit the gravel and oversteered, my bike bucked me off and I landed back on the road. Stupid me got up after I came to and kept going with the race. I felt totally stunned and was bloodied. I had to stop on the run and throw up, which has never happened to me. In hindsight I'm stunned no one stopped me.

Two weeks later it hit me. I was getting dizzy all the time and the ringing in my ears never went away. I would take it easy for a week or two feel a little better then I would got for a little 1k run. After that I would be down for the count. I couldn't even walk up the stairs without feeling like I was going to pass out. This cycle continued for months.

I went for all sorts of tests and saw a specialist that said there was nothing I could do but take it easy. My brain would heal when it healed and I couldn't force it.  It took me months before I could work out again.

I'm totally respectful of head injuries now. This was my first concusion.

Moral of the story;

Just take your MD's advice. I didn't and I paid for it.

Good luck!

TimmyMay,

When you started training again did you look into any special kind of helmet or do any research about which helmets provide the best protection? I am currently riding with a cheap walmart special (or at least will be riding with once I start cycling again...still feeling wasted). Not sure if a helmet is a helmet and the rest just has to do with comfort and aero or if there are otehr things to considered.

thanks

For sure I did. I went out and bought a $210 Bell Top of the line helmet. I was using a cheap walmart special when I crashed and it never fit right.

Make sure your helmet fits right and you spend the $$ for a good one.

Google "Post concussive syndrome". Your doctor's advice was pretty general, "go how you feel". Well, you feel you want to push it and not lose fitness...so those aren't very good guidelines.

I always tell people I discharge with mild concussions not to do any physical activity in which they could sustain another head injury (contact sports, bike riding, rock climbing), until their symptoms from the first one are 100% resolved. That includes a headache. After that, the best you can do is protect your noggin.

Symptoms like Timmy May's are also part of "post concussive syndrome", and may have been from having 2 in a row, or it could have just been from the second one itself.

thanks for the advice...over the past weeks I have found that my doctor had a little bit of wisdom. If I did only what I felt I could do, I would do nothing. Get tired very easy, headaches and nauses when I lift something that I would think of as light (30-40lbs). Also having back and neck issues. When I ran into the guy my head snapped back quite quickly and my doctor as well as the PT is saying that I have wiplash like symptoms.

So basicly I am off and not doing much of anything. As hard as it is to say, and especially after watching Iron Man on tv this weekend, it is for the best. I was putting training before other things in my life. This is giving me time to try and get back to things.

Notice that you are a Pitt Alumni...grew up outside the city myself...was just back in July...had the best Primanti's Bro's sandwich. Getting hungry just sitting here.

Go Stillers!

This is a good time to get involved in something like yoga, a stretching routine, more swimming or pool aerobics/running, fly fishing...
