Elite Veteran 617 Roscoe, IL. | Subject: RE: TdF TTT Did anyone tape yesterday on the cobblestones? My wife works late and just as the late evening coverage started our dish signal went out because of the rain. If anyone has that on tape and can copy it I'd gladly purchase it. Thanks Don |

Champion 5495 Whizzzzzlandia | Subject: RE: TdF TTT Didn't tape it, but I did watch it... I don't know the specifics, but I saw a crash before the cobblestone area, which took out a prominent contender. Mayo? (Not out of the race entirely, but it certainly damaged his standing.) Amazing how these guys ride so fast... literally amazes me. Also amazes me that they are able to resume riding after some of the violent crashes I've seen. Ugh. Road Rash everywhere. I guess it's an occupational hazard. LW |

Champion 4902 Ottawa, Ontario | Subject: TTT Sorry Rooki, I did have yesterday's race on tape but I taped over it today. Every year I keep telling myself that I should buy some new tapes so that I can save the entire collection but I always forget and must make do with only one tape which I re-use over and over again. Yesterday's race was quite exciting especially just before hitting the first cobblestone area. Iban Mayo was one of a dozen or so front riders who went down just before then and lost a lot of time catching up to the main peloton. Marco Velo was not as lucky; he went down and broke his collar bone so he is out! |

Champion 5495 Whizzzzzlandia | Subject: RE: TdF TTT OK.... I'm just going to come out and say it.... "I'M NOT SURE HOW THE T de F WORKS..." I'm watching with rapt attention, though, because I've ridden a racing bike in my triathlon experience, and I have utmost respect for the way these guys control and maneuver themeselves, and the speed! I can't even imagine..... However, I don't quite understand the breaking up of the peloton, why just a couple of guys always get away, just to be reabsorbed by the main peloton toward the end of the race.... How does the team tempo setting work? I hear the commentators talking about this stuff and I'm trying to piece it all together, but I'd like a crash (no pun intended!) course in Bike Racing, if anyone has the time to share. I understand we are not seeing much from Lance himself right now because his team mates are trying to protect him and keep him healthy so he can do well in the mountains, correct? Exactly how do the team mates protect him? I'm full of questions... and not sure where to look for these basic basic answers. Thanks!!! LW |

Elite Veteran 617 Roscoe, IL. | Subject: RE: TdF TTT LW, Bob Roll has a book out that will explain alot of how the "chess game on wheels" works. The break aways usually don't work out well to win because there are not enough guys to sustain the pace of the main group. But they try to win the sprints, sort af a finsh line within the race itself. The rider usually gets a time bonus, I've heard it called a "prime" (pronounced "preem"). A good example is the difference between Monday and Tuesday. A few riders split off on Monday's stage only to be swallowed up near the finish. Then yesterday the pelaton broke into two groups and the lead group was large enough the sustain a speed that kept the second group behind. There are races within the race, besides the Yellow jersey, there's the white with red polka dots King of the Mountains, the green Sprint jersey and one more, White i think points (?) I can't remember for sure. The team protects the leader by letting him draft, blocking attacking riders, leading away from trouble, giving him their bike should his break down, fetching food or water if he needs any. There is so much more going on than just a buch of guys rolling down the rode for three weeks Hope this helps Don |

Member 46 Walnut Creek, CA | Subject: RE: TdF TTT Yes, the other jersey is the white one and that is for the under 25 guy with the most points. I've been learning a ton watching the tour, but also read Lance's book and have been reading all I can about the team dynamics, etc. The team is so much more important. The awesome TTT performance today by the USPS team made it so I think five of the top seven guys in overall time are from that team. So cool! Can't wait to watch the replay tonight and see Lance slip into yellow. Woo hoo! |

Veteran 102 San Diego, CA | Subject: RE: TdF TTT I don't want to confuse the issue because it is kinda confusing all on its own, but you said the white jersey is for the rider under 25 with the most points. That isnt exactly true-it is like this: 1. Yellow Jersey-Best overall time in the race (there some time bonuses during the race for winning a stage and getting to predetermined "intermediate" sprints during a stage first). Also called th GC. 2. Green Jersey-Most Points. The sprinters reign here. They get points for winning stages and getting to those intermadiate sprints during the stage first, second, third, etc. These guys will never get near the yellow-they finish hours behind the overall leader. 3. Pocka Dot Jersey-King of the Mountains. By reaching the top of the hills during the stage first they receive a certain number of points. The one with the most points is the King of the Mountains. 4. White Jersey-Best young rider. Same as Yellow for riders under 25. No points, based totally on time. 5. Most agressive rider-Voted on by the Media or something after the race. Judged as the rider that was the most courageous (crazy) always going out on breakaways, etc. So as you can see there is a bunch of races within the race: Yellow, Green, White, Pocka Dot Jerseys and the Stage wins-all going on at the same time. |

Champion 5495 Whizzzzzlandia | Subject: RE: hey Whizzer! Reading, reading, reading, and learning!!! Thanks so much!!! Watched OLN's coverage last night... US Postal definitely rocks! Not only did they **DO** the best, but they were obviously the best organized.... Their lines were very straight, and their speed was good... Phonak also looked good, but not as well oiled as USP! Some of the teams were all over the roadway... USP was always in a straight line. Very aesthetically pleasing ( to the uneducated viewer, such as myself! ) not to mention very energy efficient!!! I'm impressed. LW |
