Best Non-IM-Branded 70.3s in Mid-Atlantic

Member  166   Delco, PA |  Subject: Best Non-IM-Branded 70.3s in Mid-AtlanticI'm planning on racing my first HIM next summer sometime between late July and October. I'll only be 17 so can't participate in IronMan Branded events. A few races I've looked into are Rev3 Half-Full in Maryland and Diamondman in Bear, Delaware. I'm not willing to travel so far. Preferably less than 150 miles from Philadelphia; 200 miles max. Has anyone raced in these events before? Did you like them, dislike them? What about any other races around the area you liked? A few things about me that might help with what race to choose:
If anyone could please suggest some races and help me out in choosing my first HIM it would be much appreciated. I really want to get into a good race and not sure where to go. |

I haven't done it, but I volunteered at it last year and I'm thinking of doing the oly as an aqua bike next year. It is supposed to be a very hill bike course, so if you struggle on the bike it might not be the best choice. |

Thank you: Rev 3 in Williamsburg, VA late June. Patriots in Williamsburg by SetUp Events September. Swim is in the same place as the Rev3 race but the bike and run courses are very different. |

| Member 89 | Subject: RE: Best Non-IM-Branded 70.3s in Mid-Atlantic I have done the Oly course for Half Full for the last three years. They put on an excellent race and the atmosphere is fantastic. The bike course is tough, as in hilly. The bike is my weakest link as well so I have never even attempted the HIM distance for this race. It is also colder for this race-typically mid 50s for the high and rainy. The run has a few hills but it is not bad. I really like the work the organization that the tri benefits does which is why I come back every year. If I ever get good at climbing, I want to do the half. I did Patriots in Williamsburg for my first HIM and it was great as well. A flatter bike course and quite warm (water temp 80 degrees last year) with a shaded trail run. In theory at least part of the swim should be with the current but that was not my case. Course was well supported. I am considering B2B next year but it is hard for me to do the longer events once school has started so the timing is a little off for me. Also, you could look at the Chesapeake Man endurance festival. Good luck! |

The swim was typical - but I like how they did the wave start. The ride was a two loop course - rolling hills/very pretty, and the run was nice mostly through a park and a suburb. After that the weather just starts to get too dicey, especially seeing as you're going to be soaking wet ridding a bike at about 8 AM! |

Pleasant experience, no real negatives to gripe about. Flat bike course, the run was mostly in the shade going through the woods. So, another +1 for SetUpEvents in this thread, although I dont know if would qualify as the "best" in the Mid-Altantic, but I also have no other comparisons. |
