great idea! i was resting my legs after a 34 mile ride with my husband, biking out to the lake where my second ever oly (shortish oly) would be, then riding the course, then back to the car again. i wanted to ride the course because i was nervous about doing a 20+ mile ride and being able to run 5+ miles afterwards. today i'm still resting my legs after my first ever HIM.

I was getting ready for my first sprint tri, and I couldn't swim a lick. A year on and I have done a half iron, and am competing in a full iron in august. It is kind of a good idea to go back and check, that way you can be amazed at what you have accomplished in a certain amount of time. Good thread!!!

This time last year I was 30 lbs heavier and out of breath after walking upstairs. My only exercise was 30 reps a day with a remote (each arm). Now I'm a week after my first Sprint and planning for more.

a year ago - a few pounds lighter, less muscley and swam maybe once or twice a week. had recently started cycling to work on a clapped out steel mtb that weighed a ton.

now - cycle to work daily (much further) on a much nicer bike, swim two or three times a week and running three days a week and much less body fat. have completed my first tri and am looking at doing my first ever 5k in september and an aquathlon in december.

One year ago I was burying my father.  He died after several years of declining health after surviving a disected aorta.  His death was way too early and he left 14 grandchildren all under the age of 20.

His passing caused me to take a good hard look at where my life was going (45, obese, smoker, High blood pressure, no exercise...) and to realize I was following right in Dad's footsteps in all the wrong ways.  After several months of soul searching, I eventually got off the couch and started doing someting about it.

One year later, I exercise 5 to 6 days a week, I quit smoking, I have lost 40 pounds and hope to lose that much more.  I competed in my first sprint triathlon in June and have 2 more scheduled this year.  I am enjoying life more now than I ever have and I pray that continues.

A year ago I was hiking a few miles a day with a loaded backpack. I wanted to get myself in decent hiking shape since I was leaving to do missionary work in Guatemala in early August. (I had been doing tris the previous 2 years, but took last year off.) As it turns out, NO TRAINING would prepare me for the altitude change in the highlands near Atitlán and Chicastenango! I continually thought to myself, "Wait, I'm an athlete! Why is this so hard?"

I'm still glad I got some hiking practice with that backpack, though!

I'm back into tris now, and looking forward to returning to Guatemala in February.

A year ago I was faster than I am now. I was doing training rides at 19mph, did the Chicago Triathlon and finished in top 11% in my AG, and was 15 pounds lighter. BUT BUT BUT....I wasn't an Ironman yet.

Aside from the assinine things I was doing in my personal life, I wasn't even thinking much about triathlons. 15-20 pounds heavier.... hadn't particpated in a race since my deboucle at Green Bay Marathon....

Fav. foods: McDonalds, Mountain Dew, Recies' peanut butter cups, ice cream, and chewing gum.

Within the month though, the quest started...as I started semi-training for the Green Bay Duathlon.

One year ago today I was biting the bullet and registering for my first sprint tri after just having done an OLY relay (featuring an abysmal swim by yours truly).  I surely wasn't a swimmer, only had an old MTB that I hadn't ridden in years, and HATED running.

On July 25, 2005, I also registered at BeginnerTriathlete.com.  I almost forgot that yesterday was my 1 year anniversary.  Yesterday I also had my very best and longest swim workout ever.  Musta been the BT karma.

this is a great thread. i was just thinking about a year ago the other day.

a year ago today i was hiking in the highlands of ethiopia during a 5 month stay there. but i was also about 15 pounds heavier and not in the shape i am today. after running for years, i took 4 months off while living in ethiopia and just got a bit flabby.

my last month living there i signed up for the philly marathon and got my bum back into running. a chubby, slow white girl running in the streets of addis ababa...quite the sight.

now the question is, where do you see yourself a year from now? if all goes well, i will be hiking the pacific crest trail from start to finish.

It was about a year ago within a week or two that I also first registered for BT having just completed my first sprint tri and preforming miserably. I came here to find the answers to why my swim stunk so badly ... and have continued to learn more + more about tri's from this site since.

One year ago this month also marks the first time I completed a 10k and bought my first bike (a GT Avalanche 1.0 mtb).  Next August 15th marks the one year anniversary of purchasing my Bianchi Imola road bike.

A year from now? Hopefully I will have successfully completed Coeur d'Alene and have won a lottery slot to Kona ...

One year ago I was about 7 weeks into my marathon training plan and that little seed was growing that said, "Huh, if I can do this marathon thing, then there is no reason I can't do that Ironman thing!"

One year ago, I was 2 months out from Hamstring surgery rehab (3 months of rehab) and was 1 month away from my first attempt at an Olympic Tri (HOT in Jacksonville).

I was still nervous if my hamstring would hold and would have "ghost" pains all the time.  Now the only pains I have are the pains on missing a workout and being held accountable on BT!

Thanks everyone.

It's amazing how many of us have mentioned BT in our posts and what a profound impact this sight has had on us.

I truly hope Ron is reading this, because I think that this is the best thanks we could give him for all of his hard work and dedication. The sight just keeps getting better and it is true what someone posted earlier, this sight gets better the longer you use it.

Make sure you read over all of the posts when you get a chance, they show what a really amazing group of people we are

One year ago my wife and I planned on joining a gym and getting healthy... Two months later (Sept) we actually joined. Two months after that (Nov) I actually worked out. A month later (Dec) I decided to do a Tri and ran my first 5K.

Heh, here's one of my first BT posts.  This line sums 1 year ago up quite well:

My wife keeps saying to me, "I thought you hated to run". I keep thinking to myself, "I thought I did too..."

My logs a year ago are completely blank. I think that's about the time I signed up. I was trying like crazy to get ready for my first tri in August, and my longest bike ride was about eight miles. I couldn't swim freestyle more than 100 meters at a time, and was wondering if it was okay to breast stroke the whole swim. Plus, running over three miles seemed nearly impossible. Somehow I ended up on BT - through a google search, I'm sure - and found the articles were really awesome. And then I found the rest of the site. I love this place!

One year ago today I was about 10 pounds heavier, hadn't swam since high school, and would have laughed at you if you'd told me I'd be able to run 5 miles at an 8-something split.

7 months ago I made a resolution to do a triathlon.

Three days ago I did my second tri and was 3rd in my AG.

Three weeks from now I will do another :D

I wasnt a BT addict yet.  I had just done my second triathlon ever and came in 7th out of 14 in my AG.  I was happy with that.  I did the same tri on Sunday and came in 3rd out of 34 in my AG.

A year ago I was going to the gym and doing tempo runs once a week. This year, I'm 30 pounds heavier, and having to start over with walking because I'm so out of shape. When I look ahead to where I'll be next year, that's what makes me happy. I'm never going to be here again. Next year I'll be completing triathlons, instead of reading about them.

Never imagine that I would participate in a Triathlon one year ago. I just started running 10km and was hoping to do my first Half Marathon in August last year. Since then, I have completed 2 Half Marathon, 1 Full Marathon, 3 Biathlon, 2 Duathlon and 2 Triathlon.

Well, a year ago a triathlete was not even on my radar. I was about 30lbs heavier and although I lifted weights I had next to nothing as far as endurance capabilities.

I'm looking forward to next year to compare where I am now. I've come a long way but I can envision where I'll be a year from now. God willing.

I looked at my log from a year ago and I was just finishing up participation in one of the challenges.  I was on team Good In-10-tions in which we came in 2nd place.  Through that challenge I "met" some of the best training partners in the world, literally.  I still keep in contact with Mel (Splerph) in Perth, Australia, Chris Tree (ChrisTree) in Kent, England and our team captain, Ann (Annabanna) in Orlando.  Mel, Chris and I all did half IMs this past spring within 3 weeks and pushed each other through the training.  Ann, an ultra distance runner, has become my long distance guru.   In August, Dee (Tizzy) from Hawaii, participated with our team, so I got to add another time zone.
