Something I have been doing lately which has been a lot of fun and very inspiring:

Each day that I enter workout data into my log, I go back and check my log from one year ago on that date. It is so interesting to see the things I was doing then, what my workouts were like, read my posts and see how far I have come.

Just thought I share that -- Try it out!!

Yes, I do that too. I have been on this site since June 2004 so I can look back 2 years now. There is not much difference in my performance over last year, except I have added volume.

I like to look back for training ideas: routes that I have forgotten about, ideas to motivate the kids, and other tidbits.

This site gets better and better the longer you use it.

Stationary bike, no resistance

A year ago today I was a week post-op from my 7th knee surgery and I did a 5 minute bike ride. A month ago today I finished my first 1/2 IM. Thanks for reminding me to look back!

Wasn't posting then, but I can remember where I was. 20 pounds heavier, way less endurance, way less speed.

A long swim was 1000 yds, a long bike was 20 miles, a long run was 6 miles.  I was doing great to hit 2:20/100 yds swimming, 16 mph on the bike was a super fast ride, and 8:30 miles during a sprint were my goal.

I was doing nothing but sprints and was struggling to crack 1:30 on the short ones. Now here I am a week removed from my first Oly and 6 weeks from my first HIM.

See? Isn't this fun?

As for me, I was actually in London with my wife (she was pregnant at the time and our baby is now 7 months old) so I was taking ten days off.

When I got back, I was considering trying to run four miles without stopping (I have since finished a 14.5 mile run), I was yet to get into a pool and actually swim for fitness, let alone training and I had never rode a bike for more than a 15 mile mtb ride (I have since finished a century and I bike 200+ a month).

How things have changed!!!

It's interesting how many of us were laid up a year ago! I had no entry a year ago today bcuz 1 year and 2 days ago, the entry below was made (at a later date.)

"Okay, started bike leg of Hammerman relay, got about 25 minutes into it and crashed! End of story. They carried me out on a board and sent me to Providence in an ambulance. Diagnosis fractured C4 process=3-6 weeks in hard neck collar."

So a year ago today, I believe I was on the couch on meds bugging my kids!

It's interesting that you ask this because yesterday I was thinking about this same thing. A year ago yesterday was the day I decided to do a triathlon and my first day of training for it.

Sitting on the couch, watching movies and wondering why I felt like crap.

A little over 3 months ago, I started my training. I'm a completely different person.
It's been a wild ride so far, can't even imagine how much wilder it's going to get...
and I can't wait to find out!

I was a big tub O goo and never even thought about doing anything strenuous.  Roughly 50 pounds heavier and 12% higher BF.  I did not have training logs, but if I did they would not be any different than the blank slate currently there.

Great post!!

July 22nd 2005 - I purchased my road bike.

7+ miles was a long way.

I couldn't run more than .5 miles without stopping.

LIke someone said above - overweight, smoking (although I had stopped March 26th, 2005 - the day my 2nd son was born...), and no excercise.

My first entry in my log was July 22nd, 2005.

I had just started a couch to 5k program in July.  On July 25, 2005 my log says I ran for 12 minutes.

Just a little more than a year ago I was smokin a pack or better a day. I weighed 205. The couch was my favorite place to be.

Now my wake up weight is 180. I have completed a sprint distance tri in June. I swam at 1:42/100m, biked at 17.9 mph, ran the 5k in 27:00 and finished 11/19 in the 45-50 age group, 89th of 173 males.

What a difference a year makes.

i was a few weeks into the couch-to-5K plan and a couple of weeks from dropping it and returning to the couch for the next six months.
my bike had been gathering dust on the rack for a year.
i wasn't much for swimming.

and now i've completed a sprint triathlon. hopefully in a year i can say that i've done an oly distance.

A year ago, I was entertaining the notion that I ought to get in the pool and swim since my FIRST triathlon was less than a week away...

Typical workout was a 3.75 mile run (all out) on a hilly course at 5:30 AM. About that time, I was doing it in 34-35 minutes.

Fast forward. Completed that first tri, conned a buddy into doing another 6 weeks later, did my first OLY last month, and have about 10 days until my first HIM. (I've been to the pool much more.)

One year ago I was quitting my latest get in shape program. The place you would find me is sitting in from of my computer drinking beer eating cheese and sausage and getting ever fatter. Today the cheese and sausage are gone and much of the weight as well But I still got my beer.

I had just finished my first tri and had just realized that my goal to do "a" triathlon had turned into a complete lifestyle change and a love for this sport. I also realized that the doggie/breast paddle or whatever I was doing in the water - was not going to cut it if I was going to stay in this sport long term. At time I could barely complete 400 yards (which was quite an accomplishment from where I began) and now I can comfortably swim a mile straight. (amazing what swim lessons and a lot of time in the pool can do)

Last summer I ran my first 2 miles without walking. I was not swimming, except if it included a snorkel and fins. I could barely ride my old crusty mtn bike the 3.1 miles to the barn.

It is amazing to look back. Thanks for the reminder.

A year ago I was biking a few days a week, but not much more than that.  Mainly I was sitting reading, or watching TV or messing around on the computer.

Six months ago I was walking and biking.  Trying to run, but mainly walking.

I was a madwoman even then.

I logged a 2600 yard swim and a 34.5 mile bike ride. -- July 25, 2005

July 25, 2004 was my second crack at the Reebok Women's Sprint Triathlon. Coming in at 1:41.

I have come a long way since I started this whole thing, I must say... It's been 14 lbs and several dress sizes. I've gone from sprints to a HIM and am seriously considering an IM in 2007 or 2008.

We've all come a long way.
