Subject: 300 miles...time for new shoes???
OK so when I started this triathlon thing last year I bought a nice 39.99 pair of Nike Air Max running shoes at the Nike outlet...they have been great and I have put about 300 miles on them...

They aren't really worn out but I am thinking that it is time for a new pair that is suited more to my running style and foot type...

What is the standard time to keep running shoes before getting new ones?

Also...would it be smart to try to break in new shoes 3 weeks before my first tri of the year??
Thanks,

300-500 miles is what I think the life is for a shoe.

Follow the rule of thumb of not using anything new on your race. That being said, three weeks in your shoes should probably work.

BUT... there is really no breaking in period for these shoes now as was posted here a while back. You can use them right out of the box... but then again, your feet need to get use to them before you go out and put some serious mileage!

300 is about where I relegate em to lawn mowing shoes.  I weigh around 180 and have tons of hills so chew up the front pretty good by then.  Two or three short to middle distance runs is usually my break in period.  You should be fine after three weeks.

Just my two cents...

Not a triathlete, but a prior competitive runner...

Go find you a running store. Not a mega sports store, but a store that focuses solely on running. Fleet Feet is my choice. They have a treadmill and a video camera set up to tape your feet while running and can then make recommendations based off of what they see your feet doing. These guys are trained in their field (and at my local store, they are all runners themselves).

I am loyal to mine and get a discount because I'm super sexy (actually it's cause I'm in the military).

I used to use mine for around 300-500 miles (like the earlier poster) before retiring them. A good couple of weeks, maybe 50 or so miles and they were broken in like nobody's business.

my personal rule of thumb is 400-600 miles, so i'd say 300 is a bit early. but, if you have a lower end shoe, which many of them are that are sold on the cheap at outlet stores, they will seem to break down faster because of the cheaper materials in them, such as cushioning.

nike has some great shoes that they sell in specialty running stores, but they also have some bad ones that just look like real running shoes. i call them "walkabout" shoes, as i wouldn't run in them.

i second the local running shoe store with real runners that measure your feet first, then watch you walk/run barefoot and with shoes on. try two different shoes on at the same time to get a good feel for what you're buying, and plan on spending $75-$90 for a good pair that will last a bit longer. once you find the shoe you love, then find it in outlet stores so you know it's the real deal.

ok, i'll stop ranting now and push through my last 18 minutes of work...
