I am curious to read about the elite triathletes heights and weights. Does anyone know of any info on this? I know they come in all sizes, but I am just curious as to there personal statistics.

I was curious too, so I looked up athlete profiles on the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games website.

I remember reading a long time ago that elite runners would be very close to twice their height in inches (weight in pounds). Triathletes would be a bit higher.

Well anyone can look up whatever they like.... what do you want to know specifically? Generally they have a BMI of between 18.5 and 20.5 if that's the question.

I was quite interested in this myself so I did a quick bit of maths based on the height and weights of the first 3 and last 3 finishers of the mens triathlon in the 2006 Commonwealth games.

HEIGHT:
So, the average height of the first three is 1.74m.  Average height of the last three was 1.76m.  So it seems that height has no real effect.

WEIGHT:
Average weight of first three is 66kg whereas the ave. weight of the last three was 44.6kg. (Range is from

So it would seem to be that the height to weight ratio is more important than either height or weight on it's own.  Therefore, the best and cheapest, way to become faster would be to loose weight.

(And yes I know that these results are based on very limited data so not necessarily 100% accurate but it gives a rough idea.)

Unless of course your weight loss comes from the propulsion system. Kind of like taking out a large engine and putting in a small one.

I always thought that to become faster you work harder and get in better shape.

Ain Alar Johansson, who won IM Lazerote Canaris  is over 200lbs.  Recent article in Triathlete magazine.  Think he is 6'4".

Wow! So at 6'3" I should weigh 150!?!?! My head weighs more than that, no wonder I'm so slow.

You mean the first 3 finishers weighed 44.6 and last 3 was 66 correct? So the first 3 finishers averaged under 100 lbs? That seems incredibly light.

Back in the early 80's it seemed like a lot of really fast guys were six feet tall and weighed about 150.....

I remember that because that was about the size I was and I couldn't understand why I couldn't race at their level.

Oops sorry.  Slight oversight on my part.  Weight of last three should have been 78.7kg and first three 66kg.

I'm 6'4" 175lbs and it hasn't helped me being tall and skinny. I think it has more to do with muscle fiber at birth. eg: fast twitch-slow twitch
