I competed in a triathlon last weekend with a friend who has Type 1 diabetes. She wears a Minimed Paradigm insulin pump. She couldn't wear it during the swim because it is not waterproof, and was hesitant to leave it in the transition area to re-attach for the bike and run. She took insulin by syringe and did not use her pump at all that day. How do other diabetics, particularly those who usually wear an insulin pump, deal with managing their diabetes during a triathlon?

You should ask phoneixaxul.  I don't know if she has an insulin pump, but I know she's diabetic and probably has some good pointers for those who are diabetic and race!

Thank you runnergirl29! I'm headed out of town for a few days, but I will contact Phoenix when I get back to ask advice.

I listen to a tri podcast sometimes, Zen and the Art of Triathlon, hosted by a triathlete from Texas named Brett.  Brett's wife Emily is a triathlete, and a nurse, has diabetes, and races with an insulin pump.  They discuss it from time to time on the podcast.  I'm sure she'd offer you some advice.

You could post your question on their forum at www.triscoop.com.  I bet Emily will pipe in with some advice.
