Consumer data companies are selling lists of rape victims, seniors with dementia and even those suffering from HIV and AIDS to marketers, underscoring the need for tighter government regulations, a privacy group told Congress Wednesday.

I just don't understand people I guess.

A huge hospital data center near where my Mom lives was recently broken into. They thieves stole all the servers and all the data stored in them. Thousands of patients that spanned decades. I guess we know what they did with it now.

I have my personal email set up so you can email any name with my domain and it goes to my regular inbox.  So every website or company i sign up with my email i use a citibank at mydomain type email for citibank for example.

Over the years it's crazy to see who sells my email to whom.  I'll get blatant porn spam from emails I used with big banks or corporations that you'd never expect to sell your data.

well how many are just trying combinations? So many people have numbers at the end of there email. I thinking this causes part of the problem. They just do not Spam tupuppy1 they spam them all up too tupuppy99999. It would be easy to do too.

There's some of that, but they're usually things like Bob at mydomain or generic names.  When I create accounts I create them with a name and date format, so for example my tdameritrade email would be tdameritrade1008 at mydomain so I know it was tdameritrade that i created on 10/08.  I don't get too many generic name emails, but I get a lot to the various emails over the years.

I've had this email domain since 1997 and started using this strategy around 2003.  I have thought about creating a database to track who sells my email information, from a curiosity standpoint.

Personally I don't really have a big issue with any of the email selling, but the kind of crap mentioned by the OP article is out of bounds as far as I'm concerned.

I have a huge issue if my bank is selling my email address. Email address is best place to attack someone at. If you can access there email you can access bank accounts, credit card account, and their BT forum account. Lost password button lets said person basically bypass any passwords you have on those systems.

Not all banks are allowed to share your information.  If you want to have some fun with the data you collected I would check the big banks privacy notice to see if they are in violation.

Third party retailers and the info that they collect, sell, rent and share with others would make you ill.

I'm not going to mention any specifically, but there is one that I deal with in my work.

They install a program that tracks your site visits, your purchases, and your emails.  They compile a profile sell you to companies.  Nice, no?

The reason that I wanted to complete a triathlon is because I was watching one on TV and said to myself, "I'll bet I can do one of those".
