Any recommendations on using the hand paddles for swim training? I have talked to several people at the local pool, and they all have different methods and opinions on using them, but none of them are triathletes, they are all hardcore swimmers. I like the feel of the paddles, and I can feel a good arm/shoulder workout, but it seems like my stroke gets all goofed up when I use them. Is this bad? I can recover my technique after a few non-paddle laps. Any info is appreciated.

OK, first and foremost let me say that I have NO technique to brag about but....I find that with swim paddles, I have a better stroke (longer, proper arm/elbow position, even some glide) and I roll/rotate more correctly. I try to imitate this when I swim without the paddles. I feel the paddles and bouy help me to "slow down" and concentrate on technique. I too have laps that are awkward after using the paddles but for me it is because I am not able to maintain a proper stroke without the paddles!

I guess we are in the same boat, and you confirmed one thing that I have heard,....the paddles force you to a more correct stroke....now the problem is maintaining it with out the paddles!!!

Hand paddles are great tools in enhancing both technique and muscle strength. DO NOT, however, use them for more then 20% of your workout.

I use them in sets of laps, i.e. 400 yds w/ paddles -- 600 yds wo/ paddles. It feel's more like a workout and not just endless laps. Sometimes I add a pull bouy to make things really interesting.

Make sure you have strong shoulders because some swimmers can develop injuries right away that can take awhile to heal. I have rotator cuff issues therefore I stay away from the paddles.

If you want to give yourself a goodwork with the paddles put a drag suit on and you will build some muscle.

so regular swimming trunks do the same or comprable thing as a drag suit? (i know its slightly off topic, but the answer to one question always leads me to anther question... haha) and i didnt feel like cluttering up the board with another unnecessary thread.

I use the speedo red paddles in my workouts 1-2 times a week. I also use the pull buoy. I do 800 yards with the paddles and 800 yards without. This has helped my stroke and power. Also goes a long way towards a better open water stroke. :-)
