Subject: Question about bike build kits.....

finally starting to look at bikes (and drooling too much....) the bikes as listed, say on al3sports, indicate the components and kits etc., but not the specific, e.g. FSA or ultegra cranks, ultegra cassette, etc., and not the size or gearing.  I was told I should look at compact cranks and an 11-25 for the tris and riding I'll be doing.

Is that something handled after the fact?  Do built up bikes such as the Dual come with one specific set of components and if you want to add a compact, buy it separately?  What about something like the Kuota K Factor that comes as a frame with various build kits?

Seems like a basic question.......

I would guess the kits wouldn't come with a compact unless the FSA SLK Carbon is a compact crank.

I would email All3Sports about the crank and cassette question, because there should be some kind of customization at least for crank arm length.

Call all3sports and tell them what you want. You can order on the phone and they will answer any questions you have. They can give you exactly what you want and not just what they have listed in the kits online.

I suggest not calling on the weekend either, they get really busy.

I agree with Comet.  One of the great things about building your own bike is that you can pick and choose components.  Most companies that offer build kits will allow you to substitute components.  On the down side, the kits are usually a bit more expensive than what would come with a complete bike.

If they won't let you swap for a compact crank, I'd pick up a kit from somewhere else.

I would talk with your local bike shop. You might be able to work out an arrangement that works for both of you. The LBS that I am a regular customer with, has working arrangemet. Just show him the best price you have found for any component (frame, fork, crank, wheels, etc.) and he will tell you if he can match or beat it. Be sure to include the shipping cost when comparing. If he can beat it, I order it through him. If not, I order it myself. Either way he installs it for a very reasonable charge. Sometimes if I order through him, there is no charge.
