Subject: Swim question - Beginner 1/2 Ironman - 20 Weeks - RPE
Hi everyone. I'm about to start the beginners 1/2 training program, however as I look it over I'm a bit perplexed by the swim sessions. The correlating times don't make any sense to me. The first session is 2500 yards, for 40 mins. However, there are 2000 yard swim sessions, also scheduled for 40 minutes. I figured the first time was an approximate, as I can't swim near that fast, but then when I saw the other times for shorter sessions, I thought there may be something of importance regarding the times listed. Am I missing the obvious? Any clarification would be great! Thanks!

Ignore the times. Find an ability appropriate workout of the same distance. If it takes 55 or 60 because its an interval session dont sweat it. Swimming for 40 or 45 straight is a waste of your time.

I used that program last year and I remember the swim times being off sometimes (and I'm a fairly fast swimmer). I think they're just someone's estimate so they can get volume figures for the plan (in minutes). I'd ignore them and just do the workout, or another one of the same or similar distance if that better meets your needs. I also recall that the bike times were such that unless I rode 30+ km/h (19 mph), which I couldn't for that distance, I'd never do the race distance prior to the race. Not a good idea. So modify as needed to fit your paces.

I used a BT plan and it seems no matter how I sliced it the swim times never made sense to me. In my case I left the default 2:00/100 and it had me "warm up" at 2:06. I would have been lucky to be a 3:00/100 swimmer...

I used the distance and the drills and disregarded the times.  It worked great for me and my first race. I went from 14:47 500M in April to a 42:53 1900M Ocean HIM swim in Sept.

Good luck have you picked your race yet?

FYI, LOTS of great peps here on BT!

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate the help. Glad to know I wasn't totally missing something. I think I'll just do the suggested workouts, in however long it takes me. I picked the 1/2 in calgary on July 27, as that is where I live. I believe I've got about 23 weeks. Thanks for the friendly welcome!

Glad to help.

To me some of the drills are well stupid because I don't understand how they will make me swim better. I tried to stay with the sessions (as written) but a few time I was like lets just swim...

Your HIM swim will be over before you know it!

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.

The schedule consists of 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work too. The maximum volume is around 7 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.
