Hi

I have a long term goal of completing a full IM

I have been to watch 3 Ironman`s live and was going to go and watch this years event , but am now having second thoughts , it cost a lot to get accommodation and after watching 3 what will i learn ? of course you get inspired beyond belief but maybe i am better using the money i would spend on my training and other stuff

How many IM`s did you watch before doing one ?

Any thoughts ?

Still counting.  But I watch just for the fun of it and to cheer on my friends.

Never been to a full, signed up for my first in June. Doubt that watching would help much at all.

If you've been to 3, then how would the accommodation price be much different?
While it is a lot of cash to drop on one day...just compare it to all the time you will spend getting there. This is a MUCH bigger investment in time than money. Just throw a dollar in a jar for every hour you train and you'll pay off the race no problem.

Just on TV and You Tube, probably a dozen or two.

Don't see the point of watching one live except if it was because I was there for another reason or racing myself. Triathlon is not a spectator sport to begin with.

The only race I watched prior to racing was a local sprint. After that, I had the bug and if I wasn't racing, I was too busy training to go to a race.

to get accommodation you need to book 2 nights at premium rates plus at least 5 hour drive there and back - so it adds up

so after watching 3 i am thinking maybe money better spent otherwise

2 for me. I went to cheer on friends doing IMWI one year, didn't sign up. But was back the following year to volunteer and register.

2, I volunteered once just to check it out and volunteered the 2nd time to sign up! I learned a lot both times. I worked the men's change tent. I felt very prepared for mine from a transition standpoint on all the small but important details.

Kona 2x

I'm not sure I really learned anything except

1. I'm fat
2. My bike doesn't cost enough
3. Running a marathon in the middle of the afternoon in Hawaii would be really hard.

I have never gone to an IM to watch.  Not to say I wouldn't if I was cheering someone on.  I would not go just for the sake of learning.

If I was going to spend the money to go to a particular venue I think I would be better off to go and ride or run the course to familiarize myself with it.  I know a few guys that went up to Whistler to pre-ride the course before IM Canada.

Zero. There is no training benefit in spectating.

Can't say I've ever been to a tri of any length that I wasn't participating in. Did watch Kona a few times on TV before my first IM.

None. I did an internship at IRONMAN Denmark but I'm not sure that counts. I'll be doing IRONMAN Copenhagen in August, but I would have done that regardless of the internship.

zero before I did mine.

have since watched 5, cheering on the same person in three times. they will never return the favor, but being out there making numerous athletes smile even if just 2 seconds makes it a fabulous experience -

agreed. sitting and watching for training benefit is a waste. there is a lot to be said for giving back and enjoying the fun of helping out and making people smile, but zero training benefit.

I found a lot of benefit volunteering in the transition tents. Picked up a TON of little tips by watching and helping.
You can also view/experience the course while you're there spectating/volunteering, nothing says you can't (except during the race of course!). Win-win.

I'm going to let you in on how to get faster by doing nothing. Well, not exactly nothing, but you won't have to raise your heart rate, put out 300 watts, or really even break a sweat.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

The one-arm drill. This drill will help you with body rotation, breathing, and pull. It also isolates one arm so you can really concentrate on what that arm is doing through the whole stroke cycle.
