Just got some new carbon clinchers, Chinese non branded from Carbonzone. I thought I was going to like the all black on black but it was kind of bothering me so I figured I would give them a USA flair. I have a vinyl cutter and had some scrap exhibition grade vinyl so I put together a rendition of the vintage Air Force logo seen on old bombers and color matched it to the stripe color on my bike.

Thoughts? The nice thing about the exhibition grade vinyl is that it leaves no residue so it's easily removeable.

I like it. That's a nice little touch to the bike. The silver/gray isn't overwhelming either and dresses it up nicely.

How well does that adhere? I would worry about it peeling off and getting tangled in the drivetrain.
Safer would be to stick on a negative of that image and paint the design on.

That vinyl is outdoor rated for three years...no problem with it staying put. I would normally use standard Oracal or 3M vinyl but I like the fact that this vinyl leaves no residue behind.

Very cool man!
I was thinking about a vinyl for my wheel cover, but was worried about exactly that. I'll look into those products you mentioned. Since they are just cheap wheel covers and residue isn't a concern...which would be the absolute strongest? (I don't want a solid decal, but a 1/8" pin stripe outline, so the adherence must be maxed out.)

In that case, I would go with any good calendered vinyl. Avery, 3M and Oracal make good stuff...that's what you'll get from any reputable sign shop. PM me if you want some stuff cut. I have basic vinyl cutting stuff at my house and can knock it out pretty easily.

A few things:

Most wheels use vinyl type decals for their OEM decals, so I think you should be totally fine, they won't be coming off unintentionally if they're applied correctly.

And to the OP: what software/program did you use to draw out the design?

thanks,
Greg @ dsw

I used to use Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw and then import it into SignCut or some other vinyl cutting software...but that was when I had my sign shops. Now I just have an el cheapo small cutter (sillhouette brand) at home and use the software that came with it. It works pretty well for what it is. I can cut up to 12" wide vinyl so it is a bit limited on width but fine for smaller stuff.

Looks decent sitting still. What's the effect when moving? If I was in your place, with the ways and means to make high quality decals, I'd try something white to go with the frame color and create a pattern that looks good when the wheels are spinning. Maybe like a corkscrew effect. My $.02.

My back wheel needs to be trued up. It has a slight side-to-side wobble, and I feel at times like I'm going to lose control when I ride. Is this something that I should only trust to my LBS to do?

This article estimates how much time can be saved in sprint races by converting from stock aero wheels found on most tri bikes to more aero disk and composite spoked wheels.
