Subject: Newbie question
I am planing to partake in my first triathlon in April. From all Ive read seem like most people are wearing tri shorts for the entire event. Being my first event I was not planning on buying anything special as far as clothing. From everything Ive seen it looks like the transition areas are wide open is there usally a place where somone can change out of a swimsuit into shorts for the bike and run? or should I find alternate option? Thanks for you answers in advance....

Usually no place to change. And you can't wrap a towel around you to change either.

I would recommend to either swim in bike shorts (not fun since you'll be riding with a feeling of a wet diaper), or swim in running shorts (which won't be fun on the bike, or rather, you'll notice the friction sores once you hit the shower!). Honestly, buy the cheapest pair of tri shorts you can find and use those. Well worth the investment.

Not really a place to change but depending on your swim suit you could just pull shorts on over the top, I have seen plenty of women do this at the tris I have done. I know you aren't a woman but the concept is the same.

No place to change! I assume this is a sprint you are doing.

You can just wear a swim suit and pull on runner shorts and a shirt in transition.

Or just rock the whole event in a speedo!!!

You can just wear a swimsuit for the entire thing. I see plenty of people doing that.

A cheap pair of tri short are also beneficial for training. Especially when doing BRICKs (a BRICK is when you do more than one type of workout immediately after another IE: bike then run, swim then run, or swim then bike). It's no fun to run or swim in bike shorts.

I've picked up a pair of 2xU Active tri shorts for around $30-40. They're great for racing and training. Sierra Trading Post often has great deals on triathlon gear.

If you bought one piece of clothing for this first race, it should be Tri shorts. Made to do ALL 3. In most races the transition areas are not set up to strip down, change clothes etc. Good luck and have fun.

YOu can look at several online places for an entry level tri short- Pearl Izumi for example has their "select" version of tri shorts which are in the 40$ or so range as I recall. There are other brands too. Amazon, Trisports.com etc.

I just picked up a 35 buck Saucony tri-suit at Marshalls (TJ Max). They only had one, and my wife says it's ugly, but I couldn't pass it up because it fit perfect. like someone said, perfect for brick workouts if nothing else!

I've been racing in tri's for 2 years and I just got my first pair of tri shorts. I have been using the cheap tights from Academy, I think they are around $10-$12. If you don't feel comfortable biking and running in them, you could always slip some running shorts on over them. I invited my grandparents to their first tri last spring and they were mortified when a racer stripped off all his clothes and changed in front of them!

What are you swimming in now? I've done events in a jammer with no problem. Many people have done full IMs in a speedo, so  tri shorts are definitely not a necessity for someone just starting out.

I'm in the same boat starting my tri racing career this season. I've been hunting down some tri shorts and have come across many a good deal on .com Its basically a clearance site that sells off overstock of items for a vast majority of outdoor sports. They always sell tri stuff. Its a site where you register with your email and then you get daily updates as new products are available. Most items are only available for a few days or until then run out but they carry some stuff all the time. I've had good luck finding tri shorts any given day of the week. Most run as cheap as $20 for reputable brands like 2XU or Louis Garneau.

I've bought several different things other than tri stuff too and always had great luck with quality products, fast shipping, etc.

Just to clarify, I'm not a spokesperson for their site, I've just become a fan because of good prices and quality stuff. Worth a try if you're on a budget.

Swimoutlet.com also has a lot of tri stuff and some pretty good prices.

Good luck and enjoy your first race!
