On today's long run, I caught some flack from a pair of mentally-challenged folk who felt obliged to fire insults after waiting for me to cross the intersection.  I find it strangely fascinating that some people feel compelled to behave this way towards strangers.  At any rate, after dutifully logging my run, our good friend Google led me to a blog which gave me a good laugh.

Very funny article. I have heard stories of people who yell at people who yell from cars... Otherwise known as PWYAPWYFC's... Catching up to the PWYFC at a stop light and scaring them silly.

I've never cared what the boneheads of the world yell from cars......that's a pretty weak move in my book so it just rolls off me.  One day I'll sit down and type the story of when a couple idiots decided to chuck a beer bottle at me and then got caught at the next light.  It's not a tough guy story, but I feel safe in saying that the next time one of those morons was in a car and someone said, "hey, lets launch a beer bottle at that guy on the bike"....they said, "OH HELL NO!!!!!"

Absolutely Hilarious. Well worth reading (and no, I'm not the "Ted" in the article!)

I tend to flip them off, hoping they pull over so I can test out my bike-mounted can of mace. No surprise, I haven't had any takers.

I hadn't had someone yell at me from a car in years until yesterday.   So, yeah, thanks for that...

I've started to flip off folks a few times only to realize at the last second it was someone from my track or tri club just saying "hi" and giving encouragement.  That cured me and now I usually just give a wave and smile no matter what.  I'm also not your stereotypical skinny runner, so that might be a reason why I don't get yelled at too much.

The ones I don't know how to respond to are the folks who call "Hey Lance" when I'm on my bike.  I used to take it as a compliment, but not so sure any more...

That article is very funny.  I have decided to just wave and smile when it happens. I figure if someone is really trying to be nice, then great.  If not, they are trying to ruffle my feathers and the smile/wave would annoy them.   Since I stick to paths mostly, I don't encounter it much thankfully.

I have to admit I am a reformed PWYFC... I can't explain why we do it, did it, so don't bother trying to psychoanalyze me. I had to stop when I made that woman drop her baby. At the time it felt like i won the game and it was over, now i'm a father and completely embarrassed of that moment.
