Are blisters normal when starting out or does it mean my shoes fit wrong? Is there anything I can do to help prevent and treat blisters? Why does running suck so bad

Definitely look into new shoes.  Find a runner's store (not a sports store) where the people who work there know about running and the right kind of shoe for your feet.

Running stinks because you are not used to it.  I love running despite the days that running does not love me.

What kind of socks are you wearing? I used to get blisters while wearing cotton socks and switched over to Smartwool socks and have yet to get a blister, even with wet feet. I'd try socks first and then new shoes. Sock material should be either synthetic or wool. Cotton sucks.

I used to think running sucked.  A conversation with my wife almost exactly one year ago: "I thought you hated to run".  I replied, "I thought I did, too".  There are days where I'm not exactly jazzed to run but I sure as heck didn't think I'd ever register for a half marathon.  Keep at it and you'll probably learn to like it.

Coolmax socks are another option. i agree - if you wear cotton socks then that's probably the source of the problem. on top of that - if you wear tube socks then you're almost guaranteed to get blisters, because they fit so badly.

It could be shoe fit, it could be socks, and it could be that your feet aren't used to the activity. Any time you try something new, it's not just the muscles that feel it. You'll get callouses eventually. In the meantime, pop the blisters, and slap some bandages on them. Just keep running, it gets better. Trust me.

Get some bodyglide. It comes in a container that looks like deodorant, and you can get it at most sports stores. Smear it all over your feet, toes, etc. It really, really helps stop blisters.

Have your shoes fit to your feet, you can also look into Balga socks. That is all I use and I never get blisters. Ran a mary in Feb where it rained 50% of the run and finished with no blisters.

Shoes and the right socks will make all the difference in the world.

I tired Balga socks before St. A's this past year and had no issues with blisters during the race.  Those socks are awesome!

I thought it might be my socks.  I was wearing  black cotton tube socks.   I also got a lot of suggestions to get professionally fitted shoes on my shin splints post.   My only problem is that I have 2 pairs of pretty decent running shoes and I hate to go spend another $100+ getting fitted for some.   On the other hand I would pay $300 for someone to cure my blisters and shin splints right now!

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I don't hate running that bad, I hate that I suck at it.  And it hurts a lot more than swimming or biking.

Get the right socks, but if you are still getting blisters, wear the socks inside out. Sometimes it's the seams that give you blisters.

I'm not a fan of running either, it just makes my body feel like garbage. But last week I bought the Chi Running book and I am amazed at how much better my body feels during and after a run! Granted I've only been using the technique for a week, but so far it's been great!

the right shoes in the right size means the world. As everyone else has stated, socks count too. I love my Under Armour socks.
