Subject: RE: 10 Speed VS. 11 Speed educate me please ??? Whether or not you need it is highly dependent on if you wish you had another gear when riding. But as for what you need to know... 10 speed rear shifters are not compatible with 11 speed rear derailleurs. I believe it's possible to get 11 speed shifters to work with 10 speed derailleur. 10 speed chains are slightly different from 11 speed. 10 speed chainrings are slightly different from 11 speed, but in most cases, you can simply swap out the chainrings instead of buying a whole new crankset. Some rear hub cassette bodies are only designed to accomodate up to a 10 speed cassette. I've seen people claim there is a way to convert a cassette body to accomodate 11 speed, but haven't done enough research on it myself. So in general, in order to convert your bike from 10 speed to 11 speed, you generally will need a new rear derailleur, rear shifter, chain, cassette, chainrings, and possibly a new rear hub. You may also need a new front derailleur to accomodate the different chain, but I'm not sure on that. The front is still just 2 positions (small and big ring), but for more precise shifts, I would think the cage would be made specifically for an 11 speed chain. |

Expert 2373 Floriduh | Subject: RE: 10 Speed VS. 11 Speed educate me please ??? In the movie "This is Spinal Tap" the band's guitar player Nigel Tufnel gives the rockumentary's director (Marty) a tour of his stage equipment. While Nigel is showing Marty his Marshall guitar amplifiers, he points out one in particular whose control knobs all have the highest setting of eleven, unlike standard amplifiers, whose volume settings are typically numbered from 0 to 10, believing that this numbering actually increases the volume of the amp ("It's one louder"). When Marty asks why the ten setting is not simply set to be louder, Nigel pauses, clearly confused, before responding, "These go to eleven" (Nigel.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Nigel.jpg (78KB - 7 downloads) |

Biggest benefit is that you have less of a gap between gears, for some this is beneficial, others do need it. I switched to 11 last year and love it, I am also on a hybrid crank (52/36). |

Member 1748 Exton, PA | Subject: RE: 10 Speed VS. 11 Speed educate me please ??? If you have an 11 speed you have the latest greatest tech and one of the cool kids. If you have an 7 speed with downtube shifters you are retro and one of the cool kids(have to rock a speedo too). Any where in between you have outdated equipment! In reality I have a 9 speed road bike and a 10 speed tri bike. The 10 is nicer than the 9 because it is easier to find the perfect gear. I'm sure the 11 is nicer than the 10 but I'm not spending money to upgrade that. If I would need all new components or was buying another bike I would go to the 11 speed. |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: 10 Speed VS. 11 Speed educate me please ??? There is no super huge advantage. In a couple of years 11-speed will be the standard so all you're doing now is future proofing yourself by going to 11-speed. I do have 11-speed Dura-ace Di2 on my tri bike. |

So, if I take my old 7 speed Peugeot off my trainer and use it in a Sprint I can wear a Speedo? I may have to do that this fall. |

I think through careful examination of the rules you will find that a speedo is in fact mandatory when using an older bike |

Elite 4344 | Subject: RE: 10 Speed VS. 11 Speed educate me please ??? One of the other advantages is that the shifting is better with closer spaced gears. Gear changes between cogs that just differ by a single tooth are noticeably crisper than 2 or 3 tooth changes. With an 11, you can fill in one of those 2 tooth gaps. People like the smoother shifting, but of course going to 11 will also sell more derailleurs with fans of Spinal Tap. TW |

How I see it: You can only go to 11t on either 10 speed or 11 speed cassettes (yes, there are specialty 10t on smaller hubs). I see no advantage to an additional big cog in the cassette. Unless you're climbing for hours. In that case, ride a road bike. |

Master 1858 Salt Lake City | Subject: RE: 10 Speed VS. 11 Speed educate me please ??? The advantage isn't in having a bigger big gear or a smaller small, the advantage is having smaller gaps between the two. |

191 Melbourne, Florida | Subject: RE: 10 Speed VS. 11 Speed educate me please ??? If you're going from a 10 speed 11t-23t to an 11 speed 11t-23t or even 10 speed 11t-25t to 11 speed 11t-25t, but in most cases, the switch is from 10 speed 11t-23t to 11 speed 11t-25t. Or in reality, many people run 11t-32t or 11t-36t. So the gaps aren't very gradual at all in either 10 or 11 speed. |

631 | Subject: RE: 10 Speed VS. 11 Speed educate me please ??? Fender tweeds ofter go to 12 and predates spinal tap by about 30 years. So if you "dime" most amps it is at 10 but diming a tweed is set at 12. Not to be confused with 10 or 12 o'clock on your amps knob. |

Master 1946 Memphis, TN | Subject: RE: 10 Speed VS. 11 Speed educate me please ??? Easier to dial in your cadence with 11 to choose from vs. 10. You need a new cassette obviously and a new chain designed for 11 speed. I'm pretty sure a new rear deraillur is need and possibly a front one too. Shifter need to be replaced and the rear hub to accommodate the new cassette Basically you need a new groupo. It's not a cheap upgrade depending on your groupo. I run Shimano Ultegra and to upgrade it would be a bunch of money I can spend elsewhere right now. Next bike will have 11 speeds. Edited by Jtiger 2014-03-28 10:18 AM |
