Subject: Is this an OK hill repeat?

I'm trying to incorporate hill repeats into my runs, alternating with Fartleks, once a week.

I've been told that a hill repeat should be about 150-200 yards.  But I can't find any talk about what size hill I should repeat.  Fortunately, here in San Francisco, there's a good selection of hills of varying incline to choose from, so if this doesn't work, I can just go up another block to the next hill.

I have to sat that today, the day after the hill repeats, certain muscles in my deriere are more sore than normal, which leads me to think it was at least good-enough.

To clarify, my question has to do with the incline.  What type of incline should I be looking for?

I am not an expert cyclist, but here's my 2 cents.....

I think the incline of the hill is relative to how much strength you currently have. A weak cyclist may choose a very minor grade, and get the same benifit as an expert cyclist on a steep grade.
I think the distance you're going though may be a little short- 200 yards isn't very much. I ride hill repeats at 3 ,minutes up, and a 2 minute spin back down. I do this 10x. The incline has increased since I first started these- I now ride on a steeper hill, and each week try to get further up the hill in 3 minutes

You should pick a hill that takes between 1.5 and 2 minutes to get up. You should be able to do 5-6 to start with heart rate ending in zone 4/low5 (good effort, not all out). Distance and how steep the hill is does not matter as long as you forfill those requirements. If you hill is super steep, you go slower and may not get to the top before 2 minutes is up.....turn around at the 2-minute mark.

Oh... hahaha... I forgot to mention that this is a RUNNING hill repeat.

Does the 2-minute rule still apply.  I didn't notice how long it took me to get to the top, but I'll bet it was pretty close to two minutes.

Yes, 1.5 to 2 minutes still applies.
