Let me first say that I am a triathlete and may look at it differently if I weren't but I would not wear Ironman gear out of respect for those that actually do them. The hard work and dedication that it takes to be able to complete an Ironman is amazing and they deserve for something to be "theirs."

Thats just me.

Alright I'll bite on this

Triathletes take themselves way too seriously sometimes, this is one of those times.

Wearing Ironman gear if you have not completed one is fine. Maybe you are supporting someone, supporting the brand, etc. You don't need to have finished to wear the gear, and those that think so are taking Ironman way too seriously.

Wearing Ironman finisher gear without finishing one can be different. You are labeling yourself as a finisher at least that is the perception that you are giving, so expect people to ask questions, complement you, or whatever.

But since you asked about wearing Ironman gear I say go ahead. If someone says thats "wrong" or "not fair", etc then they really need to take it a bit less seriously.

Ok, here my two cents....

Who cares what you wear? If you finish and IM and wear the gear, good for you. If you wear the gear and haven't finished an IM, then no big deal. Clothes are clothes.

I know when I walk around the metro NY area, I see alot of folks in Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants, Rangers, Knicks, etc., jerseys, and I'm pretty sure that none of them play for those teams.

So, why as a triathlon community, do we have such a stigma/issue/hang-up about IM gear. Give it a rest y'all.

The poeple I hate are those without children who have not done an IM and yet they wear IM clothing and give advice on raising children.

Never assume the internet triathlon community is necessarily reflective of the triathlon community.

^^^This for sure...

The internet triathlon community is much more vocal, yet hidden behind their avatars and usernames.

I wear the Superman logo most of the time, but I have never leapt a tall building in a single bound, stopped a locomotive with my strength, or beaten a bullet in a race.

I know... I'm a poser... and yet I shall continue the masquerade.

I do however have a Vineman 70.3 hat at home that I will probably not wear until that day in July when I finish the race. Just feel like I have to earn it.

You should wear what you want, you don't really have to explain yourself.

I do not care what you wear unless it says finisher. Just do not wear your ironman brand head phones during a race. .

But you have to admit, aside from the internet, if I wear an IM finisher shirt there is not a single person who is going to tell me I shouldn't wear it.

I wear the shirt, someone asks if I did that IM, I say no.....and then what?

Or......I wear it, you ask if I did the IM, and I say, "no, I do cross fit, I just took it away from an IM finisher."

That is what I was thinking too, IM is a brand, not just a race series.

I wont wear it until I finish one but to each their own.

My next response would probably be "well... ooookay..." and just walk away. I wont tell you not to wear it but I would certainly look at you a bit funny.

Because the general public never looks at triathletes a bit funny. *rolls eyes*

I said it once and I'll say it again, its threads like this that show that triathletes take themselves a bit too seriously sometimes. Arguing if its justifiable for someone to wear IM gear is a bit....ridiculous

At first I thought, how the hell did this thread even make it to 3 pages? Who cares?

Then I read the replies and I cantstopraffing. Yeah, triathletes may take themselves way too seriously, but y'all are also great at making fun of how seriously you take yourselves.

Says the lady who's never wearing less than 3 items of Ironcrap and has four IM DNFs to her name.

If it's useful and free or cheap, I'll wear it. If it has something highly objectionable to me on it, I may turn it inside out (no one's ever offered me a Joe Camel tech-material running singlet, though).

I don't care what other people wear. Anyone who knows me even marginally knows I don't even care what I wear!

What to wear under the wetsuit? What to wear for the bike and the run? Good thing someone invented the wonderful trisuit, to which we’ve become accustomed. It’s supposed to make our lives so simple.
