Total Time = 2h 41m 13s
Overall Rank = 14/53
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 7/9
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at a camp a few miles away. Got up, coffee and a bagel. got everything in the car and headed for the lake
Event warmup:

Swimming was an option, but I didn't do much of anything except a little stretching
Swim
  • 24m 57s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was too close to the front, so I got crawled up on a little bit. I pushed a little too hard to get away from it and gassed a little bit. Had to slow down and get myself under control.
What would you do differently?:

I'm an average swimmer, get out of the front line
Transition 1
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

I'm still awful at transition
Bike
  • 1h 24m 5s
  • 40 kms
  • 28.54 km/hr
Comments:

I'm not well versed in mountains. Hills maybe, but not mountains. Very challenging course. 18mph average. My legs are still feeling it three days later. I'm happy with it though. 234W NP average of ~195W
What would you do differently?:

I don't know, it's all about having access to that kind of terrain.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

I was pretty beat up. But again, I'm awful.
Run
  • 47m 40s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 46s  min/km
Comments:

My legs cramped a little bit on the initial climb. I got everything under control. Not my best, but I'll take it under the circumstances.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mountains

Event comments:

I enjoyed it. A challenging course but worth it. The location is beautiful. Well organized. Looking forward to next year!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).
