I would be interested in hearing who has done a IM on minimal training and why (injury, etc)? How many hours did you tap out at? This would be for just completing the race not time specific.

I did IMAZ in 2012 on zero run training due to a Plantar Plate tear.  It sort of bothered my bike training but not too bad.  Nevertheless, my overall fitness wasn't great due to the lack of running which builds my endurance engine better than the other two disciplines.

I just made sure I was in good swim and bike shape and the "run" was going to turn out like it turned out.  Cycled about 4x per week (three 1 hour weekday trainer rides and a four hour weekend ride) and swam 4x per week.  I tapped out at about 10 hours per week.

Swim 1:09

Bike 5:15

Run 4:41

Certainly not my fastest run but the one I'm most proud of considering I didn't run in the four months leading up to the race.  Base endurance really got me through the race in a decent time.

My takeaway was that run training was overrated.

That's a pretty decent time! Very nice. I def believe the bike conditioning carries over to the run as well

I'm not quite half way into my IM training. I just raced a sprint and on Monday I woke up and felt like I'd been drugged! Not sore, just incredibly fatigued.

So tell me why I want to bother swimming the other strokes? I'm IM training, and plan to swim freestyle for the entire race, is there an advantage to working on the other strokes?

I’m a 240lb man, and I run relatively long distances. How would you recommend training for marathon and IM distances as heavy as I am?

It makes no sense to train hard for a year to hone that aerobic system only to have all that training undermined by a few anaerobic bursts on race day. So, how do you go about it?

Byrn won’t hold your hand through the long hours and miles required finishing or for success in an IM, he can only show you how to get there. The work is up to you.
