I like it.  It's well-written, approachable, and has some good tips.  Looking forward to seeing more.

Yep, all good points. Saturday was my 10th tri and I still got that panicked, can't breathe feeling for a while. I find that it is imperative that I warm up in deep water, put my face in, practice breathing and sighting, etc. before the race starts. Also knowing what freaks me out helps -- I'm in Michigan so I can never see the bottom of our muddy lakes, but knowing how far out from shore I am does make me nervous! Telling myself things like "there is a kayaker right there, you will be fine..." really helps. Also finding a phrase or mantra to help you through -- Saturday's was "Breathe and roll. Breathe and roll." Ha! It must have worked because I took a few seconds off my time from the last race. =)

Adding you to my reader and looking forward to more tips. =)

Good post. I especially like the "Eye on the Sky" deal. I use that frequently when OWS'ing. It is very relaxing and calming to see a tree or something stable as you move along.

Some good tips.

Rotating more to rest or get your breathing under control is great strategy.  A slow freestyle is still faster than switching to breaststroke or backstroke and burns less energy.

I also like the suggestion about warming-up prior to the race.

I used to be a competitive swimmer and still struggle with a lot of the things you mentioned. I really don't like open water swimming haha
