Subject: Injured Knee 2 weeks from IM Bolton
I injured my knee on a 200km bike 3 weeks ago i had a really bad stabbing pain in my knee cap it felt like something was trapped and the next day when moving my knee it was really painful and felt like the tendons that run over my knee were squeeking. I changed my bike shoes and cleats which must have caused this. This has now all been fixed I have had a full re bike/cleat fit etc.. and the bike is perfect. My kne is not 3 weeks down the line... and I have IM Bolton in two week and missed out some really important training weeks before tapering

However I have irritated something on my knee cap that after 40km on the bike resemble a knitting needle pain in the top of the patella. I have had 5 sessions at the physio he said said there is no actual damage to the knee but I do have limited movement in my IT band and my foot was badly out of position in my cleat which could of caused the damage. I also sprained that ankle 8 week ago so Im getting swelling again. i have done tons of roller work massage etc put this still continues when i go for a run or bike and is now causing my other knee to hurt.

I feel physically fit and I have been going for regular 10/15km run to keep up that fitness but the knee hurts all the time but is bearable-ish I never push it too much. it is painful the next day, then absolutely fine so I leave it a day or two then run and the same happens.

I haven't touched my bike in two weeks as I'm worried I'm going to irritate it further again before the race. My swimming is good so apart from getting through the massive panic attack at the start I think I have that part covered.

I'm just worried this is my first IM I have only done one olympic tri this year but got a pb... should I just not do anything in the legs till IM or does anyone have any other suggestions???? Please help I have raised a blood fortune for Macmillian and I cant let them down.

Scott,

Sorry to hear your knee and ankle woes. Other than stretching alot(!), icing as needed and perhaps getting some massages to make sure your body is as ready to go as possible, it doesn't sounds like there is alot left to do. Perhaps some ibuprofen would help in case there is any swelling. And when you injured yourself on the bike, were you doing hills or sprint work? Perhaps you were pedaling with too much force? I would think that if you ease up a bit and spin easier (ie less power per pedal stroke) that you knee might not be so problematic....and you might be able to get through the bike leg.

In terms of what other training you might be able to do, how about water running? It's low impact and will help keep up your fitness. Otherwise, I would take it easy. And it sounds like IMB might be a full 17hr say for you...and if it is, so be it.

Good luck!

how about dry needling? I've been reading good things about it, but not sure if it works. Good luck!
