Subject: aspirating water during swim
in my last two races and while practice swimming I get about half way through my swim and start coughing like crazy and coughing up a froth that starts out pink and gets redder as the swim goes on.

Anyone else experience this? I don't aspirate a large amount of water. It must just be the accumulation of water a little bit at a time. I've been to the doctor today. I don't have any infection or pneumonia in the lung. I don't have shortness of breath or pain in my chest. The only thing I can think of is that I'm accumulating water a littel bit at a time.

Any pointers?

How far are these races?

I'm no dr, but I could cough and hack for days and never see anything pink. That doesn't sound right to me.

Go to the doctor and tell them you're coughing up a mixture of blood and sputum. This will give them what they need to start an assessment. If I'm reading your post correctly, your symptoms are by no means normal.

You both said to go to the Doc, but the OP says "went to the doctor today"

Second opinion?

If he didn't go to a specialist he needs to. I'm guessing he went to a general practitioner.

There something wrong somewhere if he's coughing up blood tinged sputum.

Sounds like it could be swim induced pulmonary edema (SIPE). Fairly recently described phenomena, but I've seen it a few times in the medical tent when I'm volunteering instead of racing. Usually self limited and responsive to supportive care. Do a quick google search and you will find all kinds of references. If you saw a GP or were not clear about the mechanism and development of symptoms, easy to see how the diagnosis could be missed. A couple links to help start your search:

Hope that helps! And talk to your doctor.

^^This. It won't be on a GPs radar, so either bring it up specifically or go see a pulmonologist.
