Cooper Fitness Center at Craig Ranch
67F / 19C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 03m 9s
Overall Rank = 39/365
Age Group = M 45-49
Age Group Rank = 4/34
Pre-race routine:

Got to bed around midnight and woke up around 5:10am so definitely did not get enough sleep. I really need to prep the bikes a day earlier. I had a banana for breakfast and not much too drink. Left the house around 5:40am but still got there before 6am and had just enough time to get everything done.
Event warmup:

No warm-up really.
Swim
  • 08m
  • 350 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

I only swam the first 100m close to what I was predicting. The rest of the 250m was sad as I lost form. I haven't swam much in the past month (probably 2-3 times total and they were short swims so I knew I was going to be slow - thought I'd lose around 30-40 sec, but lost another 20 sec.

I ended up having pretty clear water for the swim - had to pass someone around 150m in, and then had another person pass me on the 4th lap but saw them coming so I gave them room. Another 2-3 passed me in the last 50m but I think I passed most of them back on T1 or the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I really should try to consistently swim at least twice a week. Unfortunately, with my heavy work schedule, something has to give, and decided that my swimming will have to take a back seat for now.

Comparing past results

2010: 9:28
2011: 7:34
2012: 7:08
2014: 8:00
Delta from last year: 52 sec slower

Transition 1
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

I made myself move faster and it also helped that I have a pretty decent rack assignment this year (first row and 1st and 2nd rows were pretty good). I could've shaved another 2-3 sec max so I was pretty happy with this T1.
What would you do differently?:

2010: 0:54
2011: 1:04
2012: 1:08
2014: 0:42
Delta - 26s faster!

I was 3rd fastest in my AG so not really much to complain about.
Bike
  • 31m 54s
  • 12 miles
  • 22.57 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty strange bike leg for me as my legs just did not feel good today. My cadence was way too low for my race cadence (should be closer to 86 or even higher) and I didn't do a good job of managing the surging especially when I went uphill. Need to level the effort out so I don't burn up legs.
What would you do differently?:

Keep effort more even. My average power was around 216W with NP at 230W which was a full 20W than what I expected to race at. I did way too much grinding so need to keep my cadence at a higher level also.

New bike course this year compared to previous years so I can't really compare

2014: 31:54
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

I thought this was an average T2 for me. Probably could've shaved 3-5s but I was 3rd fastest so nothing much to complain about.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much to complain about as I compared previous years:

2010: 0:45
2011: 0:50
2012: 0:56
2014: 0:44
Run
  • 21m 46s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 21s  min/km
Comments:

Horrible first mile - ended up getting a sharp cramp on my left calf right near the start of the run so I had to slow it down a bit and shorten my stride until I was confident it wasn't going to turn into full blown cramping. After that, I was able to push reasonably well but still didn't have extra gear as I've been doing too much long distance work.
What would you do differently?:

Probably should have taken an electrolyte pill on the bike's 2nd loop to help prevent cramping. I need to learn to push through the slight twitches as I lost at least 30 seconds being overly conservative.

Comparing past times:

2010: 24:01
2011: 21:48
2012: 20:41
2014: 21:46
Post race
Warm down:

Did jog for a couple of miles to get some extra miles. Did a 1 hr normatec session when I got home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I have trained less this last 12 months than any other time since I took up triathlon. I need to start balancing out my work hours a bit more so that I don't completely write off working out and staying in shape. Also need to be more efficient with time at home.

Event comments:

Still probably the best sprint triathlon (with pool swim) in the metroplex. They did give out finisher medals which surprised me.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
