OK, a preface, I know if I lose more of my own weight (already down to 210 from 300, so it's getting more and more difficult) and train harder my bike times will improve, but....

Given all things being the same, if I were to lose my 15 yr old Schwinn Voyageur and move to say a Cervelo One or Felt S32 bike (something in the $1000-$1300 range) how much could I expect my time to improve. I just finished a fairly flat, somewhat rolling 11 mile course at an average of 18.5 mph). Did a very hilly 12 mile last month in about 49 minutes, or 14.5 mph, but wasn't pushing as hard as it was my first.

So, any thoughts? Guidance?

I asked a similar question of my BF, whom I consider my own personal bike expert. I'm currently riding an ancient mountain bike (Ok, it's a 10 year-old Gary Fisher). I'm hoping to upgrade to a nice used road bike in the next 6 months or so. Currently, my average speed is about 14 mph. He estimated that I'd gain at least 2 mph on a ligher road bike. Maybe just one mph until I learned how to "ride" the road bike with the correct form.

This is where you shave hours off your time, not minutes! When I first asked the question in March, I was told I could expect at least a 3 MHP gain. I did my first tri using my husband's MTN bike and I averaged 13 MPH. Pitiful, really but I also didn't have a lot of training under my belt. On my ride last Saturday, I averaged 17.4 MPH. Part of it is training, but a huge part of it is the bike.

I'm looking at those two bikes as well! Gotta convince my wife to let me though :-(
