Subject: stomach crunch
I was wondering if some body could give me the best stomach crunch for the lower stomach? I have all the upper and sides down pat, but i cannot seem to get rid of my lower bulge.

Thanks

Greg

let me see if i undestand you right: you want to flatten your lower stomach, and you beleive you will do it by doing crunches. from your description it looks that your BF% is low enough and is not issue here.

i suppose it is some kind of postural deficit (maybe your pelvis is tilted forward). you can improve your poisture with proper excercise, imho crunches alone will not do it. if you can borrow  The Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion book in your local library, i'm sure you would find a proper sequence of excercises for your specific issue.

Keep in mind that "spot reduction" is a long debunked myth. No number or type of crunchs can rid your stomach of its buldge, regardless of what late-night TV ads will tell you. As you exercise, your body burns fat from all of its fat stores, not just the area specific to a given workout or exercise.

Exactly. What your seeing (or not seeing) is a result of where you cary you fat. As you total BF% goes down, your lower abs should come out. Genetics do play a part in this as well.

Thanks folks i feel a little frustrated by it because my upper abbs do show and yet my lower dont? maybe it's generics but i am training for an IM so it could be a food issue as well.

Thanks for your feed back

I'm not training for an IM but I feel your pain. Have you had your body fat tested? I'm in the same boat as you...upper abs/4 pack are there but not the lower abs and I'm at 11.1% BF as of last week. From past experience, my body needs to be at about 8% for my lower abs to show.

Hi, Greg. It looks to me that everyone overlooked that you already have low BF%. Is it true?

I still suspect that may be your poisture, not BF. More specifically, position of your pelvis bones. (I am not affiliate of Egoscue Method in any way, maybe it would be helpful if you just consider this option. But it is not quick fix.)

Good luck!

Okay, there's no such thing as "spot reduction" of fat, but there is such a thing as exercises that work on specific muscles.

FWIW, for lower abs I occasionally do hanging leg raises (on that vertical contraption in the gym where you rest your elbows on pads and your legs hang), scissor kicks (I rest my hands under my tailbone, keep my head up, and do a horizontal scissor kick for 60 beats, rest, repeat), curl-ups and V-ups (the V-ups are harder, but if they ever get easy try holding yourself in the "up" V position for a count of ten, yeah back when i was a kickboxer one of my dear teachers tortured us with those), and, well, I don't even know what to call one:  lying on back back on an incline bench, with my head on the upslope and my feet pointing down, I hold the grips with my hands and SLOWLY brring my legs up into the yoga "plow" position, hold for a few seconds, then slowly  bring them beck.  It's hard, but to me feels realy good.  3 reps is enough.

The caveat of course is that I personally have NO visible abdominal muscles.  Yeah, um, now that i'm not kickboxing any more, i don't do ANY core work regularly.  And my BF is... significantly higher than yours.   So... good luck!

I agree - you can't get rid of stomach flab by doing crunches - lots of cardio!
