Be STRONG you can beat it!

This is one of my biggest fears (yes, I check monthly at the very least).

You never know what to say when someone brings this to the front of your mind.  All I can offer is my best wishes for a full and complete recovery.

We're a pretty tight group around here, and we'll certainly keep you in our hearts and minds.  I look forward to reading your next race report after all of this is said and done.

Good luck and be strong.

Wow, I don't know what to say except it's great that you've caught it now and not later.

Kick it hard on the treatment and recovery.

HEY ! All of us BT freaks are here rooting for you even though we haven't met !

Glad you got an early diagnosis and have the will to fight. You WILL win with that attitude. Your determination reminds me of when I met Lance (ya, THE Lance) at a Leukemia fundraiser ride in 1997. He was inspirational, like you.

I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I'll be sending tons of energy and prayers to help with the tough times. My best friend is a cancer survivor and a true inspiration. Her attitude is amazing. During chemo and radiation, she was like "MEH. I can do anything for a year." It barely slowed her up then and it certainly doesn't now! Stay strong and keep sighting on the cure buoy!

Fish,

Tough news! I just had the V not too long ago and I can't imagine getting that sprung on you amidst all the anxiety of getting snipped (kind of puts getting snipped in perspective).

I'm a big believer in everything happens for a reason, so glad you were in for the V when you were. I'm sure your training will serve you well during your treatment. I lost my mother to a different type of cancer two years ago (almost to the day) and just wish she had found it sooner and that her body had been in better shape to fight it.

So, now I am using triathlon as a way to hopefully help prevent cancer, but should that not work, then to help me fight it (my story just got covered in the local news last week if you have any interest in checking it out http://www.11alive.com/video/player.aspx?aid=56273&bw=).

My prayers are with you. Best of luck in your fight and I look forward to reading about the great outcome.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Your great attitude will serve you well, though, and you'll be able to race before you know it. I bet the RD will roll your registration over to next year!

Thank you so much for your thoughts, your prayers, and your warm thoughts. One of the things that I love about this place is that it attracts a huge number of quality men and women. There are things that separate us, make us different, define us as unique. The thing that occurs to me now is what brings us together, beyond simply competing in triathlons: a desire for community, a willingness to support each other in everything we face or attempt, and the love we have for each other.

I have received e-mails, PMs, and postings from so many people from BT. One of the things about this disease is that it's a roller coaster ride. One second your up, then down, elated, depressed, triumphant, down, sure, etc... When I hit the low spots, I jump back here, refocus, realize I'm going to beat this thing with my God, my family, my friends, and the strength that each of these give me.

If I had to be honest, I'd say I am proud, honored, and a little humbled to have you on my team. Thank you.

Meredith--sorry to hear about your husband. Rest assured, my path is straight, my aim is true. Thank you for the benefit of your wisdom.

TBZ--thanks for the hugs...and the example of a winner.

Re: the sig line--Dead Freaking Last is greater than Did Not Finish, which is greater than Did Not Start. It was my theme for my first tri. Seems even more appropriate now--rest assured, I'll finish strong.

emartin--you and I go way back, and I'm proud to have you as a freind.

rd (my initials as well)--tell your brother--he should hear it from you, if he has not already. Thanks for the benfit of your experience...

Again, thanks to each of you for everything....it means sooo very much!

So sorry to hear, but I'm so glad for you that they at least found it. I don't know if you've undergone further tests to confirm a diagnosis yet or not, but I'm sending out positive vibes your way right now.

Be strong keep up the positive attitude.

Fish:

Don't be afraid to take charge of your treatment. I had a good relationship with my oncologist. He even let me override his recommendation to take me off some of the chemo early (it was cuasing lowered lung functioning). If you don't understand the whys of your doctors recommendations, ask.

Good luck on your treatments.

In no way am I attempting to hijack or detract from FishrCutB8, but I wanted to press the importance of self exams.

http://tcrc.acor.org/tcexam.html  is a great guide.

FishrCutB8 - 2006-08-16 2:03 PM I I wanted to post this because I know there are a LOT of young guys on here, healthy guys who can't imagine this kind of thing happening to one of us. It does. Check yourself once a month.

Older stats, I know, but FYI:

Testicilar cancer accounts for only about 1 percent of all cancers in men, according to the National Cancer Institute. About 7,000 Americans were expected to get the disease in 1995, with an estimated 325 deaths. Compared with prostate cancer, estimated to kill 40,400 of its 244,000 victims in 1995, testicular cancer is relatively rare. However, in men aged 15 to 34, it ranks as the most common cancer. For unknown reasons, the disease is about four times more common in white men than in black men.

Not hijacking at all. Guys: TCRC is a fantastic resource, as I noted in my blog. They have all kinds of info on the hows, whys and wherefores. Sty hits it dead on, guys--check yourself once a month. If it doesn't feel right, GET IT CHECKED IMMEDIATELY!!!! Time waits for no man...or his boys.

or...insist your wife/GF/SO take a real good looksee/feelaround down there quite regularly...tell them they can get a much better look at things than you can...for medical reasons only...ooh yeah...

Seriously though, my wife does do a regular feelie on the boys for lumpy-bumpies, but pressure/sensitivity is a subjective thing, and it takes some practice...and more practice...same thing for me doing a thourough breast exam for her - she's always had some wierd thing for not wanting to check herself, so I oblige her...

Hey Fishy,
Here is a great link for people who have cancer/serious illness and want to still be active through treatment. It lists doctors and resources. Please check it out!

http://www.activesurvivor.org/portal.php

My cousin is a breast cancer survivor and is helping to start this program I can give you her email privately if you want to talk to her about anything else. She is more than happy to help others go through this and kick some cancer a**!

God speed.

I hope this helps a little:

Today, I rode with a co-worker who, seven years ago, was diagnosed with the same thing. His situation was complicated by the fact that some cancer had spread to his lower GI. After an operation, a course of chemo and I am not sure what else, he got a clean bill of health and proceeded to train for and complete a local marathon, around six months after the last chemo treatment. Ran something around 3'20" on a tough course. If I hadn't seen it, I would not have believed it could be done. He has since qualified and completed Boston. .

Good luck with the near future - However tough it gets, you can do it.
