Try some belly breathing and/or put your hands on your head to engage your diaphragm more.

Based on which side you have a side stich, exhale strongly in sync with that foot landing.  This stiffens the diaphragm and often cures the side stich, nearly 1000% for me.  If it doesn't, then I slow down a bit and then it does.

I find given my pace the best approach for me is "inhale, inhale, EXHALE, inhale, inhale, EXHALE" kind of pattern - two small inhales, one big exhale in sync with the foot strike.

I started getting them a while ago. I've been able to keep them away by deep belly breathing when I feel them coming on. There was a post maybe 2 months ago about this, and that's where I got the idea from. It works for me in the pool too. I'm not sure if I started holding my core to tight or what, but now that I'm trying to breathe more from my belly rather than my chest I don't get them anymore. It took me a few weeks to a month to make it a habit, and I never notice it anymore.
