Run
Comments: Found a sign for the 9-10 minute mile group. OKAY, this is a good place for me. If the legs feel good maybe I can get more out of them....if not, I am in a reasonable pace for my fitness and the heat (and humidity) Pretty much from the get go I started out hard. Just kept trucking. Crossed the bridge in the thick of the crowd. Hit mile 1 just under 10 minutes. Passed a community band (as in trumpets and wind instruments not guitars and drums) playing patriotic music. Oh yeah , this is small town Farmville, VA. Hit the turn around and grabbed water. Had passed a young girl --maybe 8 years old --running with her dad and cheered her on a few times. I love seeing kids at races. About half way back in there is someone on my heels--a 20 something girl who was a mistress of encouragement cheering EVERYONE who was still on their way out whether they were walking or running. Yep, great person on the course. She eventually passed me and then I caught up to a man whose tee shirt back said "running for my father" ....I told him to come on cause I ran for my parents too. He picked up his pace briefly but I passed him. By the time I hit mile 3 my heart rate was 175-176. I wanted to puke in the heat with that HR but just kept running. When I got to the finish my daughter told me I couldn't throw up. Really. When she realized how high my HR was she understood the nausea.....was funny. What would you do differently?: Not much. My legs have good and not so good days, this one wasn't a great day for my legs but I have definitely had worse runs. This was pretty good for me for where I have been in the past few months. Post race
Warm down: Water, grabbed an orange. Hung around a little bit then walked over to the park where the post race party was. Waled around town a bit, went to my daughters dorm to shower. What limited your ability to perform faster: It's HOT & HUMID. My legs have been cranky. While they had an okay day--I have definitely had better runs....but in the humidity that was a good run for me. Event comments: This is the second year for this race, there are things that could be better....but for a small town race with 2 simultaneous events it isn't too bad for it's second year. If my daughter weren't attending college in that town I wouldn't drive 90 minutes away to run a 5K--and the half marathon course is the same trail, just more of it....Post race events were geared for the local crowd, more of a craft fair with food tents Last updated: 2014-08-27 12:00 AM

Got up way too early to drive 90 minutes to Farmville. Had a half banana and a protein shake in the car with my coffee on the way up. Texted my daughter to meet us because she was volunteering and had picked up my race packet--nice to have a kid in college in the town where the race is held....or so I thought. My daughter was still in bed. Her volunteer shift started at 9 AM and she assumed my race was later. Was about 2 steps from getting in a volunteers car to get another race bib when she showed up with it. Seriously, I think I pinned my number on about 5 minutes before race start.
Walking from the parking lot to the race start maybe half a mile....Anxiously texting my daughter to get here NOW.....Find the signs for predicted pace so I could line up in a decent spot.
