28 days left to first race (too early to stress?). Trying to sort through the logistics. Venue is 45-90 minutes away by car, depending on traffic and time of day. Event is on Saturday, 9/16. Info says there is a mandatory racer meeting that lasts 45 minutes and runs all day Friday, the packet pick-up is till midnight night before, and bikes can be racked until 11 pm. Race starts at 7:00 am. I'm local to the race and not sure I need a hotel, but maybe I do. My questions (for now) are:

1. Is the spot where I rack my bike gonna be my transition spot for the race? Or do I move it in the morning when I set up for T1 and T2?
2. Do I have to rack my back the night before? If not, what are the advantages and disadvantages of doing it ahead of time?
3. If I didn't rack my bike, how early would I realistically need to get there and get set up?
4. Is the extra hour of sleep (which is more likely to be laying in bed awake afraid the alarm clock won't work) and being down at the venue the night before worth the money for the hotel, or should I just stay and rest in my own bed and get up at 4:00, instead of 5:00?

Grateful for any and all replies, thanks!

Larry

1. Depends on the race. Some assign a specific spot for a specific bib number and you must orient your bike according to the side of the rack on which your number appears. That is the spot where you do your transitions. At Racine, they were handing out penalties for people that didn't orient their bikes in the correct direction on the rack. I would assume a bike not racked in the correct spot is also a cause for penalty. Depends on if its USAT or not I think, or the local race director discretion.

2. It sounds like there is no race day packet pickup and they want bikes racked the night before and won't let you bring one in the morning of the race. I would check with race director by email.

3. see #2

4. Up to you. For me, an hour ride on race morning is normal. But that means you have to make 2 trips (one for packet pickup and one on race morning) if you stay at home.

Good luck.

Wow, $200 for a sprint doesn't include the hotel room?

Nope. And that's not all it doesn't include. Hard to believe, ey?

4. Since you're local, I wouldn't bother with a hotel. Why sleep in a strange bed when you can be at home in your own?

If you practice your transitions beforehand, setting up your transition area should be second nature come race-day and shouldn't take very long at all.

The best way to get specific answers to your questions is to email the race director. As for sleep, chances are that YOU WON'T sleep much the day before the race. Instead focus on getting as much sleep as possible 2-3 days before the race

Good luck!

I just did my first race a couple weeks ago, but couldn't resist being a smart@ss. Just stick with the advice given here by the others, make a checklist, and practive your transitions ahead of time then you'll be in great shape for the race.

No problem about the SA attitude. It's all good (wife says I'm full of sh*t and that is why my eyes are brown). But if you send me some brew we can call it even :-)

Gonna work on transitions this weekend.
