Subject: Tire punctures
Wheeled the bike out this morning and discovered, to my dismay, a 1/4 inch long tack protruding out of my front tire (now who would leave such a thing lying around a bike storage room???). The tube is punctured, but can be patched. My question is about the tire - do I need to patch the inside of the tire or can I just leave the hole (it's about the size of a large pin) as is? Or do I need a new tire?

I have had some experience with tires...not because I've been riding for a long time, but because I have gotten a lot of flats. If the tube (when replaced) would stick out of the hole, you need to buy a new tire. There are some temporary fixes (like if this happens on a ride) like a power bar wrapper or dollar bill, but the tire should be changed ASAP to prevent another flat.
