Graduated to the Olympic level triathlon today and finished with a 2:43:15 time. I did something today I know I going to get some stern feedback from a couple of you. I decided last night that I was going to roll on the bike with only Gatorade in my speed fill and leaving the water bottles at home. my reasoning was it wasn't worth the extra weight and I could catch up on my water intake on the run. HUGE MISTAKE!! I came off the bike really craving water, the warm Gatorade actually left me with a cotton mouth feeling. I had water bottles in my transition backpack but with all of the rush I forgot to grab one before heading out on the run. And to make a bad situation worse I soon learned the 6 mile run course only had 2 water stations and one was out of water. My run times suffered from the lack of hydration on a very humid day. When I finally got water at mile 4 I stayed there for what seemed like forever taking in about 8 to 10 cups of water. I know this was a big rookie mistake and trust we, I learned a very valuable lesson today.

I'm signing up for another Olympic for Memorial Day and I guarantee hydration won't be a problem again.

Race report is up:

Dennis - great job in your race!

Planned to swim Friday night. Thunderstorms negated that plan. Tuned up my mountain bike yesterday and went for a good ride towing my 5 year old in our Wee Hoo. Mbasically turned my bike into a 90 pound bike. Good strength workout for the legs. Worked out early this morning. 3x20' @ 90% FTP.

30 minute light run on Saturday 1:05:20 on Zwift Island today.

Dennis and Dave congratulations on your races.
Dennis every race comes with a lesson. Oly is a tough distance. It quickly turns into a really long sprint, plus it is long enough that you need nutrition, but too short for anything substantial. Hydration at longer distances is a tricky animal, and it takes time and mistakes to figure out your balance.

Almost back to the land of the living.
Dennis and Dave and Gabe, great races.

Dennis, you are fortunate to have learned the nutrition lesson on an Oly. So many don't learn it until at least a 70.3.

Gabe, you never cease to amaze me!

MarkZ, has it really been 4 years, wow?

Mitch, my totals for April: 24 days and 48 hours and 36 minutes - whew!

I will make sure my May log is updated properly and then I will post on the board.

Dennis: Great swim! How did you like the Oly compared to the sprint? Every time I tell someone I'm doing sprint distance they ask me when I'll do an Oly. What is the greatness of that distance? How did the 10k compare to the 5k at the end, I mean outside the lack of water

I am married to Tawas, because I am still Liaison, even though I gave up my position in City government when I was elected to the school board. I would love to have you up again this year. I am open to other races on other dates if you have one.
Also, I think I will do the Detroit International Marathon this year. I have two more weekends of coaching soccer and then I will retire from coaching and can just be a Dad and spend the extra time on my training.

Thanks Beth, I had to swim faster, there were signs warning about alligators in the pond posted all along the shore line. For my first experience with the Olympic distance I would have to say that it felt like a long sprint. I didn't really think it had enough distance for me to in the aerobic zone for the whole race but then again to be at 90% MAF for close to 3 hours is a bit extreme. I've had several of my local tri group friends tell me that the Oly distance is tuff because it is that in between distance and there are a lot of different variables to deal with depending on how you approach it.
I have a 3 more Olympic distance triathlons this year so I'm hoping to have a better opinion and race strategy developed at the end of the season.

1 hour on the drainer (Zwift Watopia Isalnd while completing TR's Mount alyeska - 4x6' @ 105-109% FTP).

Really been struggling the last week with motivation. I traveled for work for a few days which always impacts me. I took yesterday off which was probably good. Feel like I've been in a training doldrum lately. Schedule willing I will swim at lunch and run on the treadmill tomorrow.

Gabe - update noted and it will show up the next time I post monthly results.

Catching up on my workouts. It's budget season at work so like my busiest time of the year. It's also severe weather time in Texas. Just planting my excuse tree for later in this month when I look less consistent. On the upside I did my first 2 a day on Monday -- I totally went to sleep before 930pm, I feel old

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
