Subject: Kindle Reading Devices

I like the idea of getting a Kindle reading device for step-daughter. Getting her something that does more than read just doesn't make sense. (Read: enabling...) But she is an avid reader. The thing I like about my Kindle Fire HD is that I can download books from the library (Overdrive is the service) on the device and it opens in the device. There is no need to connect to computer to download or download on a computer and transfer via wifi.

Read, anyone who has one of these reading devices...is there a way to download and read books on the device without using another device or computer to transfer.

Thanks :-)

I have a Kindle 2 (read: it is 6 years old, so my knowledge may be outdated). It has something called Whispernet, which is like an Amazon specific wi-fi. All you can do is download books. My MIL has a newer Kindle (not a fire) that connects to their home wi-fi to download books directly from the library and Amazon.

Last night I saw an ad for the latest and greatest pure reader from Kindle, the Kindle Voyage.  It looks like you can get WiFi only or WiFi with 3G, and this is also true for the previous 'latest/greatest', the Paperwhite.  It looks like the only version that doesn't offer wireless connectivity is the regular Kindle.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite. Can download books from Amazon right on the Kindle over WiFi. For library books, I have to check them out on a computer, bu they get pushed to the Kindle via WiFi, no need to physically connect the Kindle to the computer.
