Subject: Recommended bike upgrade?
I posted a similar thread in the "Gear Review"... I guess I just want to get the best deal I can here.

Here's the story: I have a 1991 Schwinn Crisscross hybrid. I put aerobars on it, and slightly smaller tires, but the bike just isn't built for speed. I averaged a little over 18 mph during my last race (which I was happy with), but I KNOW I could go way faster with a road bike.

I've casually looked at the Felt F90, mainly because I can't afford much and the triathlon store in town has it for $689. (With my income, it could take years to afford something like that!)

I'm looking for opinions here -- I'd like to upgrade to a road bike, but I'd like to stay in the $600-$700 range. (I'm dirt broke.)

Any recommendations? Thanks...

Check in the classified section of this forum. Somebody just listed a Q.R tri bike for $699.00.

If you are looking new,  Bicycling magazine just raved about the Giant OCR3.  I think it is about $650.  Also a few months ago they rated the Trek 1000 as "best bike under $700".  The trek has a Womens version too.  I test rode that felt f90 and it was a sweet bike.  But it was $690 normally.  Wait till end of season or start of season sales and you might find something under $600.

Used is often a good option.  Problem is you have to wait for a good deal, on a good bike, and it has to be the right size.  Seems like it never happens for me that I find all 3 criteria.

Another option, try renting/borrowing a road bike and see how much difference it makes.  Maybe it isn't as much as you think.

bad news is that road bikes can be expensive. the good news is that even the cheaper brand name road bikes are pretty good. any reputable shop will let you take some bikes out for a test ride. i would ride the trek 1000 (i really like the '06) and the lower end felt and giant mentioned above and see what you think. all three of them are a pretty good value.

FWIW, I've got a Trek 1000c (2005 model) that I got for $549 because it was last season's model. I really like it. Salesman said the 1000c was about the same as the WSD. I have really liked it. I have thought about clip on aerobars but really like having the extra brakes up top so I doubt I'll remove them to make room.

By getting on the lower end of the spectrum I was able to afford clipless pedals and shoes...

By the way, when is the "end" or "beginning" of the bike sales season? It gets nice 'n' cold and snowy here, so I'm imagining something in the December - February area...am I close?

Nope. Usually in September/October, dealers try to liquidate old inventory in order to order new models in time for the Christmas shopping season.

I never thought of that!!!! THANKS!

I'll be sure to try a few red bikes, when that time comes!

New is always better but look used as well I got a 2004 Fuji Team off craigslist for 775 with shoes, helmet, pedels, pump, and some clothes. It had 44 miles on it.

It's funny, I see sales at the bike shops now that have some 05 models still left. But you really need to make sure you are fitted properly on the bike. Not every 54cm frame is the same. Go to ALL of the LBS' around you, ride the bikes in your price-range, and then decide. Make sure you FIT on the bike - that trumps just about any deal. The wrong bike for 50% off is a terrible buy for you, unless you can resale it for more than you bought it for, at which point, you've gotten a HECK of a deal...

The other thing about the fit, is make sure the "salesman" is really checking your fit.  Some LBS are horrible at making sure the bike fits YOU.  They see a commission check coming their way and could care less IF you ever come back.

When you go wear your bike shorts, make sure they understand you will be out for a 10-30 minute ride.  Most shops that WANT your business will have no problem with that.

Check the papers, one of our LBS had last October a 10% off sale.  Once you find a shop and a bike, if they aren't listing a special ASK.  They might be willing to knock something off the bike.

I ride a Trek 1000 that is 4-5 years old now, someday I will upgrade to a Tri-bike, but not likely in the next 1-2 years.  When the 10% sale comes around this year, I am planning on getting a mountain bike.  That way I can off road with my kids.  Skinny tires get stuck in the mud!
