Subject: Where in my plan?
So this is my typical week
Monday-Off or light swim
Tue-HARD trainerroad bike 1hr with very hard interval work, lunch time 1000 yd swim
Wed-Easy 45 min run
Thurs-HARD trainerroad bike 1 hr 15 min w/ hard interval work, lunch time swim
Fri-Easy 45 min run
Sat- 2 hr trainerroad bike w/ some fairly hard interval work
Sun- Long run

Question: I really want to do a hard hill run workout each week. But I don't know where to fit that in without doing too much hard stuff. Could anyone please tell me what they would do? Thanks!

When I was tri training I had hard bikes on Tues and Thursday and still did a track workout on Wednesday.  You could manage a hard run on Wednesdays just fine.  Also you need more swimming if you want to be competitive.  A lot more.  Two lunch swims at 1000 yds is less than I would in one workout.

Sometimes I wonder if we're just trying to fit everything into one week because it's a convenient time packaging....but maybe it's not the most realistic or appropriate way to plan our workouts. I feel like I could accomplish everything I need to in a 10 day cycle but it would be quite the stretch to fit all that into a 7 day cycle without getting injured. So I usually end up sacricing something....

Has anyone ever experimented with a different structure besides "weekly" in their training plans?

missj might have a point, how about trading one of those hard trainer rides for a hard run every other week.

I'll be doing a hard interval session on the trainer this morning and then running some hills at lunch.

I can't claim to have cracked it but I am sure I need to get away from trying to plan on a 7 day cycle. Its so unnatural for a 3 discipline sport including times when a hard session demands rest afterwards.

I am also massively slow lol.

You could always build it into your long run. Otherwise, run hard on Wednesday and back off on your Thurs bike if necessary.

How long is your long run on Sun? Easy fit w/o changing anything in your schedule is to incorporate the hard hill workout w/ your Sun run. IMHO, many people would benefit from making the long run something other than long & steady.
BTW, what are you goals?

I've seen training systems that utilize 10 day weeks instead of 7.  The reason most amateurs use 7 days is because we rely on weekends to get our long foundation work in.  Also it allows the training week to be more routine, which most people prefer.  If you can get a 2-3 run/bike in during the week, then your options are way more open.

Like Arend mentioned, I often will do a hard interval session on the trainer and a hard interval run session in the afternoon.  I tend to find that my running is better on a day that I also ride (even if they're not back-to-back).

IMO, you don't run or swim enough.  Personally, I'm pretty sure I'd be setting myself up for injury if I were only doing two 45 minute runs (one with intervals) and a long run (how long?) per week.

What distance(s) are you training for?

I'm training mainly for Olympic distance but have done all distances. I pretty much only train early morning and sometimes something quick at lunch. Having six children makes it a little challenging to fit things in. It seems like most things I read say that for your key(hard) workouts you should be rested up for so that you get the most out of it. Seems pretty much impossible to me. I think I'll start throwing the hard run in in the evenings after a hard bike that morning.

I just feel like for my run to improve I need to get a good speed/hard run workout each week. And I have a great hill right by my house that I have done hill repeats on and it's a great workout. Bcagle what are your thoughts?

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.
