Subject: Garmin 910 w Pool Swim Tri

I know there was a thread on this before but I can't find it.  What's worked for using a Garmin in a race that has a pool swim.  I'm only concerned with capturing overall time for the swim so I can see where I am at throughout the race.  My guess is it will loose satellite when I go inside and acquire it again when I head out to T1.  The watch will ask if I am inside at one point which I'll hit no and just start it as usual  ?

It takes a bit for it to get a satellite so it has me questioning if there's a better way?

I'm not sure if this will help, but what I have done in the past is wear my Timex sports watch so I can capture all splits (swim, T1, bike, etc). I put my Garmin on my bike handle bars and then put it on my other arm when I go through T2. It takes me about 10 seconds to take it off my bike and put it on my arm, so I don't lose much time in T2.

Thanks that's not a bad idea. I think try to keep it as simple as possible but I may try that.

If you use the multisport mode you will get the whole swim (and the whole tri) without issue. I didn't get lap data in the pool like I did with my regular swim, but it did lock into satellites pretty quickly when outside, though, so I was able to get data for the bike without issue.

The weird thing, though, is that the Garmin saves the "mulitsport mode" data as separate files for each leg of the triathlon, including the transitions. So if you program "swim, T1, bike, T2, run," you get get five separate files.

Turn your watch on outside and acquire the satellites there. In multi-sport mode, make the first leg a "pool swim" instead of open water.

It never asked me if I was indoors doing this and the satellites quickly were acquired when I got outside (certainly before I was done in T1).

I definitlely remember a pop up on the watch asking if I was indoors.  Usually if I forget to turn it off right away and I'm inside.  What I did do this morning is time how long it took to acquire satellite.  About two mins which seems a bit long to me since the 310 I had was pretty quick.  I realized this morning I've never worn it for a swim in the pool so that's probably why I am questioning what it will act like inside.  Oh well.

Thanks for the replies.

^^^This^^^

It's crucial that you:

  1. previously put the 910 in swim mode with settings for the pools that you're swimming in (indoor or outdoor, 25 yd, 25m, or 50m).
  2. Change it to either bike or run mode and acquire satellites outside the building before you enter the natatorium, and leave it on until you enter the natatorium.
  3. Change into multisport mode as close to the natatorium as possible, and set whether you want transitions to be included or not.

Practice with multisport in training to make sure you know how to use it.  It's simple, but unforgiving if you set it up incorrectly, or press any buttons other then Lap, or press it at the wrong time.

The length of time they take to acquire satellites will vary depending on how long it's been since you've had it turned on, how far you traveled since the last time you used it, weather conditions, and proximity to buildings, trees, and tall hills.

If you do what I posted above, it won't give you the pop up asking if you're inside.

Open it in modern and you'll see it all in one big event.

Thanks that helps a lot. I'm good with multi sport as I've been using a garmin for a few years. The pool part had me confused a bit. All the races i e done are OWS and I don't wear it in the pool for training. But i really appreciate the detail there. Thanks !

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.
