Wanted to share my idea for a chainring protector.

I'm tired of getting my outer chainring damaged by baggage handlers or TSA taking the bike out for inspection.

What has happened is a tooth (or two) gets slightly bent or curled over and could be potentially a race ender.

So, I came up with this simple solution that might be good for anyone with a soft bag or worried about TSA.

The basic form is a "J" curved piece of plywood that is mounted on the small chainring of the crankset. Simple velcro straps are used through the crankset spider.

This serves 2 purposes, (1) to keep the chain on the lower chainring and provide a "lip" to protect the outer chainring from ground hits.

I also secured my crank arm to the chainstay to keep it from moving.

Let me know if you have any suggestions or comments.

it would be nice to have this as a product. something with a better design of course..lol

pretty much anytime the wheels are removed the chainring is vulnerable.

One more thing you could do is get some split loom like you use to protect wire bundles and put it over the big chainring teeth. Just as another bit of protection for them.

Good idea to protect the chain ring. What first came to mind was pipe wrap.

Get a Scicon soft sided case....the bike sits in a frame so TSA just opens the zipper, but can't move the bike.  The chainring touches nothing.

Initially I did try a channeled vinyl edging on the chainring. The problem was when the bike was set down hard, the teeth broke through.
I assume the same would happen with the pipe insulation....also wanted something easy to put on.

But maybe pipe wrap would work ok.

could use your initial setup hollowed a little with a thin'ish layer of wrap inside... that way it's a bit softer on the teeth but still has the outer protection.

yeah good idea.

I'm actually using it for my current 70,3 (Honu)

Pretty happy with how it worked so far. It was nice when putting together the bike before the wheels were put on.
Usually I am setting it up on concrete floor, so the protector was there, instead of the normal rag.

That is a pretty cool idea.

I have had luck leaving the chain on the big chain ring and taping it on. The chain covering the teeth seems to work fairly well.

The only thing is that an impact hard enough to damage teeth, could damage chain. Granted, it is a cheaper replacement, but still a potential game-ender if you didn't see it and it broke on the course.
