What kind of underwear is good to wear during running (for a male). My tighty whities rub and chafe like crazy, boxers or nothing provides me no support. Boxer briefs are OK, but start to rub after about 20 minutes.  Any recommendations?

For me it depends on the distance.  If i am going for a 3-5 mile I can wear general gym shorts with boxers or boxer briefs without problem.  If it is 6-10 I wear running shorts with builit in lining.  If it is 10+ I typically put some type of compression shorts on under running shorts.

I have chaffing issues too.  I just lube up like biking and it seems to do the trick.

Commando. Cotton wasn't made for running.

I use the C9 compression style from Target.  They are similar to an underarmor but I actually like them better.  They are way cheaper too.  I personally like the ones with the longer thiigh as it elminates any chaffing issues for me.

I chafe badly too, even after like 2 miles. You may try a pair of under armor boxer briefs. If you get the right size they'll give you good support plus they won't chafe and they wick away sweat from your legs quite well. I wear them for cycling too and think they're great.

No underwear is the best underwear!  Seriously, commando is the way to go.  If you are run training most running shorts have a built in liner.  If you wear tri shorts the same thing, commando!  The less you have underneath the better because there is nothing there to cause chaffing.

I use the square cut lycra boxers that don't have any seams in them for running.  I usually wear tri shorts over top and get no chaffing what so ever.  I call it double bagging, I run with alot of women who wouldn't appreciate me bouncing my package from side to side for 20 or so kilometres.  I usally go commando in bike short because they have the chamois and you are seated most of the time.  Its a question of comfort mixed with good ettiquete.

Running shorts with the built in liner plus a little body glide on the inner thighs and on the boys to prevent any problems where the boys rub the thighs.  On colder days, I'll wear some seamless boxer briefs (NOT cotton) under the running shorts for a little extra insulation.  Whatever you do, don't wear cotton.  It doesn't wick away moisture and, when wet, is as coarse as sandpaper.

When running, I wear running shorts with a built in liner - for a running portion of a brick, I'm in my tri shorts.

I wear underarmour boxer briefs with soccer shorts. No chafing and for me, works well because I have tons of soccer shorts around.

Thanks guys.  The consensus seems to be anything NOT cotton.  Must be why I hate all my underwear for training!   I think I'd prefer compression shorts over the tiny running shorts, so maybe I will try those.

2. Tri Shorts.

I think you received plenty of feedback on the big NO for cotton. That's true for socks as well. Some will argue on tops, but definite no on underwear and socks basically anything that will get wet and rub (recipe for chafing).

Nobody really explained it, but the synthetic materials are good for the very reasons that cotton is bad - synthetics are hydrophobic so they wick water away rather than holding on to the water. Again, wet and rubbing will cause chafing.

I always run in my running shorts or tri shorts. If you like compression style shorts, then it'd be worth investing in some tri shorts that you'll use in a tri anyway. Think of a tri short as compression shorts with a light pad for cycling in which you can also swim.

Can't comment on running in tri shorts, but in the past was a "competitive" runner (although not very good...5K PR 18:30, 10K PR 40:00). I always ran in the shorts with the liner in them.

Great advice.

Commando with a generous supply of BodyGlide!!!

I always wear some type of compression short (under armor, nike dri-fit, etc) under my mesh shorts.
