Subject: Vegetable oil smell
I'm not a triathelete, but I do own a wetsuit for scuba diving, and I read that vegetable oil was a good lube for getting my suit on easier. This was a mistake. The smell is absolutely atrocious, and cleaning with a gentle dish-soap hasn't gotten rid of it entirely. Do I need to keep going at it with the soap a few more times? Is there any particular tactic, here? Or am I doomed to smell like the dumpster behind a McDonalds for the rest of my wetsuit's lifespan?

Thanks

Oh, I should specify it was pure liquid vegetable oil, not Pam or anything. So don't worry about any other chemicals

Veggie oil will go rancid pretty quick and that's what you're smelling. The reason why you're struggling to get the smell out is because the cell structure in a wet suit will allow air to be trapped, or in you case, the oil.

If you have a bath tub, soak it for 24 hours by filling the tube enough to cover the wet suit, and then weight the suit down it's submerged.

Cooking spray is actually better than veggie oil, as you spray very little on your knees, calfs and shoulders (the snagging points). Yes, it's not good for the suit, but on the other hand, it takes such a long time for it to have any real negative effect that the suit will be worn out before then anyways.

Well, it's only got a very slight smell now. I think it'll do until the next time I decide to wash it

Try Odoban. It gets rid of nearly all nasty odors, and is a disinfectant.

Here is a great recipe to make a healthy pizza fit for a triathlete using thin crust, hummus, fresh vegetables, tomato sauce, lean meat and mozzarella cheese.
