Total Time = 44m 35s
Overall Rank = 44/125
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 4/7
Pre-race routine:

Arrived about 1 hour before race start, checked in, and headed to transition area. I was lucky to be the first bib number in my rack so I had plenty of room on the end of the rack. I got set up and then scoped out the pool area. Also tried to figure out the transition entry/exit.
Event warmup:

Not much, I jogged a little bit and tried to warm up my shoulders without actually getting in the water.
Swim
  • 06m 55s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt pretty good for most of the swim. Faded a little on the last 100y or so. Unfortunately they didn't track transition times so I think my T1 time is baked into the swim time.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up better. Because it was a time trial start, I had to wait almost 45 minutes before I started my swim.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 went pretty well. First race with Bont Riot Tri shoes and they were a little tough to get on when my feet were wet, but overall I don't feel like I wasted any time. Transition times were not measured at this race.
What would you do differently?:

I was using my Fenix 3 for the first time in a race and I accidentally hit pause instead of lap coming out of pool, and I didn't notice it until well into the bike, so I didn't get accurate T1 or bike splits.
Bike
  • 21m 58s
  • 7 miles
  • 19.12 mile/hr
Comments:

First time racing new tri bike. Need to make some adjustments.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 went smoothly.
Run
  • 15m 41s
  • 2.3 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Typical issue with calves starting to cramp immediately off the bike, but I stretched them quickly on a sign post and avoided any cramping. After that I felt pretty good, but probably could've pushed harder earlier. Somewhat disappointed with overall pace for such a short run.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on bike fitness to avoid calf issues.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim technique, calf issues off bike.

Event comments:

Fun, quick race.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
