Subject: IM 70.3 Questions
I've been able to fake my way through Sprint distance swims in the past. Within the last month something "clicked" and suddenly I was able to go from huffing and puffing after 200 yards to being able to do 1000 yards non-stop before a brief rest break. Turns out it was mostly a breathing issue, and have learned to take "sips" of air and am kinda using some Total Immersion principles as well. Very excited for my progress

That having been said, I've decided to set my goal for an Ironman 70.3 by the end of 2016. I've bought Don Fink's book IronFit's Secrets to the Half and plan to follow that training.

That sets up my questions:

1) Vineman 70.3 or Ironman Santa Cruz 70.3? I live in Nor Cal so I don't want to travel too far i.e Oceanside or St. George, Utah.

2) Any input on the IronFit 70.3 book and training? I know I'm not going to follow the "Competitive" plan, but am not sure if I should try the "Intermediate" or the "Just Finish" plans. My training time is hit and miss on hours available per week.

3) The stupid question: Does Ironman allow you to use an interval timer like the Gym Boss? I've found that on long runs I need to do the Jeff Galloway Run / Walk and need the vibration on my arm to let me know when each interval comes around. The OBVIOUS answer is "Don't be a pansy, and properly train to run the ENTIRE run portion." I just want to know just in case.

Can't speak to 1 or 2

I don't see an issue with a gym-boss, most athletes use a watch or gps that can have interval settings on them, and functionally it isn't any different.

Also, nothing wrong with run/walk. There are some VERY quick people who find they simply tend to do better with the galloway method, and it's YOUR race, not the race of anybody that has a problem with you not being "hardcore enough".

I doubt there's any problem with a vibrating watch. I have done run races and tri runs with/around/past people who have some kind of talking watch (or I-phone app?) that tells them their pace every mile or km, and people who have audible watch alarms set for their hydration and nutrition. It seems like if that's allowed, something quiet that doesn't obstruct your hearing should be no problem. It's generally earbuds that are not allowed.

As for the races, if you're not a confident swimmer, I would look to which has the easier swim course. I think I looked into doing Vineman a few years and actually some people were complaining that the swim is too easy (very shallow)? It's possible I have it mixed up with another event, though. I'd check the description. In general, for beginners, an ocean swim will be more challenging (unless it's in a very calm bay or lagoon), as will one where wetsuits aren't allowed.

Thanks Hot Runner. You're right. It is Vineman that has the shallow swim. A couple of my colleagues have done it and said there's areas where you could actually stand for a breather.

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?
