Subject: Altitude Training Mask
So, I'm a flatlander from Kansas - and I completed my first 70.3 this year, about a month and a half after that a group of us climbed Pikes Peak in Colorado. I'm seriously considering doing the Boulder 70.3 in June and know that the altitude plays a big role on race day (for those not used to it). While I did the hike fairly easily, the altitude did mess with me a little as we got higher on the mountain. I'm putting together my "wish list" for Christmas from my wife and kids and was wondering about the Altitude Training mask as part of my gear.

I did a search on here for any reviews and to see if anybody has talked about it previously, but it yielded zero results. Has anyone used this? What did you think of it? Would it make a difference going from Kansas out to Colorado? Did you like it, dislike it?

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you!

That video is a pretty decent explanation of why it is useless.  Basically, it's a gimmick product that is taking advantage of people's misconception of how someone adapts to altitude and the benefits of training at altitude.  I got a training mask for free at a race expo.  It was so stoked because I knew it would make the perfect gag gift for a coworker.  I mean, not only doesn't it work, it makes you look like Darth Vader at the same time.  Unless that's the look you're going for.

If you want to do better at altitude, go to the venue early. 1 to 2 weeks is what the body takes to adapt to the high altitude, by making more red blood cells.

Beyond that, remember there is less oxygen! You will have to dial back the effort a little more than you are used to, but don't worry so will everyone else.

They need to bring down the costs of altitude generators and corresponding sleep tents

You can achieve about the same results of the mask by putting a couple of large straws in your mouth and breathe thru them while training. A little experience showed me that 6 months or training with a 50 pound pack at sea level did nothing to over come the altitude of hunting at 12000ft. It took time to acclimate. That said if you have the endurance at sea level and have a few days to acclimate, you should be fine.

Back when my masters swim coach was training for the Olympics in Colorado Springs, she told us there was a well-known coach who would have them swim with snorkels and then apply tape to progressively reduce the size of the opening, allegedly to improve the forcefulness & efficiency of their breathing.  The swimmers thought it was about the dumbest thing they had even done.

A lot of stupid things have been done in sports in the past - hypoxic sets swimming, depriving athletes of water while training to make them stronger, and using altitude training masks.  Over time we learn better.  Sometimes because athletes died.  The amazing thing is there are still people who believe some of these idiotic things.

Altitude training has become a hot topic to increase performance. Since not every athlete can simply relocate to an altitude environment the next question is how can altitude training be simulated?
