Member 1748 Exton, PA | Subject: First swim meet in 29 years So I joined a master team about a month ago so I would have people to swim with closer to my speed. We learned about a local Masters meet in the area and 4 of us decided to go swim. It was my first meet since 1987, needless to say I was much slower than I used to be. It was inspirational to some of the older people there still swimming. With that a world record was set in the women's 80-84 age group in the 400 IM. |

I also remembered after doing this that I was never very good at 50's. |

Worked hard in the pool over the next year, went back to the same meet in 2015 and swam the same events. Dropped 2.2 seconds in the 50 free, 6.5 seconds in the 100 free, and over 23 seconds in the 200 free. Probably would have dropped more in the 200, but I also swam the fly leg of a 4x100 meter medley relay about 20 minutes before. |

An 80-something year old woman completed a 400 IM? Geez. I can barely finish 100 butterfly. Edited by 3mar 2016-01-18 4:44 PM |

Just can't quite find the nerve to pull the trigger. It's been 30+ years since I climbed up on a starting block. Afraid I would fall off! World records are always fun to witness, doesn't matter who set it or what it was for - it was a WORLD record! |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: First swim meet in 29 years I did my first swim meet in 49 years this past June. I've definitely fallen in love with swimming again, and view myself more as "a swimmer who does triathlons", rather than just as a triathlete these days. One reason is that at age 62, my legs are starting to rebel at doing a lot of running mileage and swimming is definitely easier on the body. Another big influence has been Sheila Taormina who became coach of my masters team in the middle of last year. I'm planning on swimming in 4-5 masters swim meets this year and doing 3-4 triathlons. Been swimming 50 & 100 free, 50 breast and 100 IM. Probably will add 50 Fly to the mix for my next meet. Mark

Nice work! I was surprised when I saw your post cause you said you hadn't been swimming. That's a shame about your final turn in the 100. At least you didn't mis judge it and turn too far out. I think that's the worst cause then not only do you loose all your speed but It's like you just stall. |

They had timing matts on both ends of the pool but the far end it was a short matt and I guess my feet go a little deep on my flip and hit just under the matt. The wall was very slippery, and when I hit it, my feet just slipped right off, so it was a complete stall. Edited by mike761 2016-01-19 8:19 AM |
